So how many of you are purchasing a GeForce 3?
« on: May 04, 2001, 10:07:17 AM »
Well now that people are starting to buy the brand new nVidia GeForce 3, do you think its going to threaten PlaySation 2 in anyway? Looks pretty solid now that reviews are out and screens are showing its features in action. As a manner in fact, lets fire off this topic by showing our readers just how bad this card is

  • Manufacturing technology: 0.15 micron
  • Number of transistors: 57 million
  • Core frequency: 200MHz
  • Number of pixel pipelines: 4 with 2 texturing units each, with 4 textures per pixel per pass (two clocks, 2 textures per clock)
  • Memory Amount: 64MB (with support up to 128MB) 128bit DDR SDRAM at 230MHz
  • Memory Bandwidth: 7.36GB/sec based on 230MHz DDR
  • Bus interface : AGP 2X/4X (including SBA, DIME and FW) and PCI 2.2 (Bus Mastering)
  • Integrated TDMS transmitter for digital monitors with support up to 1600x1200 resolution
  • Maximum resolution : 2048x1536 @ 60Hz
  • Maximum texture resolution: 4096x4096 @ 32bit
  • NVIDIA Lightspeed Memory Architecture™, data caching
  • Hardware T&L with NVIDIA nFinite FX™ technology
  • Full hardware support for DirectX 8.0 and OpenGL 1.2 features, including full support for Pixel Shaders and Vertex Shaders version 1.1
  • Hardware tessellation of smooth surfaces
  • S3TC and DirectX DXT1-DXT5 Texture Compression support
  • Cube environment mapping support
  • Embossing, DotProduct3 and Environment Mapped
  • Bump Mapping (EMBM) bump mapping support
  • 8-sample Trilinear Filtering plus 16, 32 and 64-taps
  • Anisotropic filtering in Direct3D and OpenGL
  • Full-Scene Anti-Aliasing with multisampling and Quincunx methods, with both Rotated (2X) and Ordered Grid (4X)
  • Z-buffer compression, HSR (Hidden Surface Removal) based on early Z-test.
  • TV out (S-Video and Composite) with HDTV but without NVIDIA TwinView support (as per GeForce2 MX line)

Ahh this card looks pretty good. Progressing where the GeForce 2 GTS left off. Now lets see some screens of this stuff in action.

Giants - Quincunx FSAA

Quake3 - Quincunx FSAA

Quake3Arena "ANISOTROPIC = 64-TAP" image quality

DroneZ - With Pixel/Vertex Shading

A nice shot :)

A threat to PlayStation 2? You decide. Just please, leave out that controversey about GeForce 2 vs GeForce 3 nonsence. My topic states if you are purchasing one and what are your thoughts.

I want one bad, but its going to have to wait

I won\'t buy a GeForce3 until I update my motherboard and Processor

On top of this I\'m closing on my new house next week so I\'m pretty much broke

but no PC card is a threat to a console.

and the Geforce 3 is a full generation behind Xbox\'s graphic\'s chip. MS pretty much paid NVidia to develope their next gen chip in advance and give MS XBox a head start on the technology

This is why I\'m excited about the possibilities of XBox.

I look forward to seeing games optomized for its final hardware

I most likely will,why.....cuz I\'m a tech freak.

It does look impressive, and I\'ll buy it when the price comes down. And when I can sell my "aging" GF.2 GTS.

My obsession with compootah\'s is becoming a sickness :p

Hu? Console graphics superior to the PC graphics? Was N64 far ahead of itself than let\'s say the 3Dfx Voodoo 1? That was back around 96, I doubt it.

One machine I believe was ahead of its time is Dreamcast and it still is.

I\'m in the same boat as you, ddaryl.  Except I have a penny-pinching miserly wife who doesn\'t wanna spend dime one on computer stuff.

Blessing part:  If I could I would buy all the video game stuff I wanted.

Bad part:  I would be broke and so would my wife and child.

I guess its good that one of us is responsible! :D

Threat to console?  Nah.  Too high maintenance.  If I wasn\'t such a computer freak, I certainly wouldn\'t take the time to try and figure out how to squeeze every last bit of juice from my system for gaming.

Bottom line:  I would buy it if I were single with the job I have now.  I can\'t buy it now.  And PC I don\'t think will ever be a threat to the console market.  In fact, I happen to think the whole tac of trying to convert the PS2 into a "computer" will be its downfall, if it has one.  But that is another topic all together.  :D

I\'m not getting an Xbox until they discover the flaws with it..... and I\'m especially not getting it if all of the games suck!........ So I\'ll have to wait 2 years after it\'s released.
.... take the skin and peel and back...

now doesn\'t it make you feel better?

There seems to be a method to convert your average
Geforce card into a Quadro.
If I remember it\'s just switch moulding two different \'cillenders\' on the card which then identify your card as the Quadro it actually is.
Wowzers ! even better than GF3.

Yep there\'s a hack for it.But in order to enjoy that you must first fix the 2d quality problem with most GF.2 cards.

I had a link somewhere.I\'ll try to find it.:)

I am seriously considering the ge force 3. With me updating my system real soon from a p3 450 to a amd +1 ghz .

And with me traveling to Los Angelous in less than 2 weeks, and cards costing $315 at some places which would cost me $630 australian dollars.

Where the aussie release will cost over $1000.

Actually the N64 was more powerful and had better looking games than anything done on the pc at that point.  N64 held this title for several months after launch until voodoo1 did take it away from them.  This is not opinion.  It was also stated in videogaming mags by pc gaming developers.

Bottom line is that consoles always show us something new on release, but the PC grabs the eye candy awards sooner or later due to upgradable & expensive hardware and driver updates.  This cycle will probably always go on...

I\'ll Prolly wait GF3 MX.. "or what ever it will be called."
or Crush...

and PC games/playing is not threat for any console.. and wont be for some time. with the price for each played gamehour is just too much. "at least if u want to keep your machine on top of the line."
