Info on the new chip for the PS3! READ THIS
« on: May 09, 2001, 09:04:03 AM »
in this latest issue of PSM magazone, they talk about the PS3\'s chip, now i dont know ow much you guys know but this opened a whole new look on it, and made me drop my jaw, here is the story, this story was pretty long so i kinda narrowed it down and got to the point, you HAVE to read it:

Sony Corp, Toshiba (manufacturer of the PS2\'s emotion engine and graphics synthesiser), and IBM have teamed up to design and build a processor architecture optimized for unprecedented multimedia processing power. Early estimates of the architechture for these processors, code named "Cell" predict as much as 200 to 1000 times the power of PS2 :D. The 3 company\'s will invest more than $400 million in Cell over the next five years, looking to launch several types of consumer poducts using the chips (among them PS3) begining in 2004.

now this the part that got me, listen to this:

Interestingly, the "Cell" moniker reflects the theory of the chips working within the lrger broad band network. Ken Kuturagi, CEO and president of SCE, describes the processors comprising and "organic" whole, or a massively parallel computer like IBM\'s "Deep Blue". Justr as thousands of biological cells organically connect to each other to form a complete physical body, cell based electronic products and systems, being connected with each other with optical fibers, will create truly broadband networks world wide".

now thats deep.. this would be the specs right here

While the chips were made initially witch .18 micron technology, and more recently with .13 microns, Cell will be designed at .1 microns, setting new standards for size and and performance (courtesy of IBM). in and of itself each cell should be extremly powerful, but the ramifications of Cells witchin a larger network are staggering. Kututagi says, "one Cell processor will have say, 1-teraflops performance; 1,000 Cells make 1-petraflops performance. Then1,000 of these [groups of] 1,000 Cells can combine". while the theory of all this techincal jibber jabber conjures imaginations of power beyond out wildest dreams blah blah blah...

well that was all i wanted to share with you, imagine that much power will be in our PS3.... "Cell"  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHA

The fact that technology evolves so fast, makes it very hard to know what will come in the future.
I don´t think about PS3 yet. I know they are doing theory on the technology, but we can´t even imagine whats around the corner.
Just imagine 200 times more powerful than the PS2!
Scary stuff.

Chips working with the BB network? Sounds like forced network connections so they can monitor you, force advertisements, keep track of what your playing, if your playing with warez, etc.... sorry, count me out. I won\'t allow my privacy to be invaded for games....

Of course, I might be overreacting....

Sony, Toshiba, and IBM have entered into a 4 or so year 400 millon dollar agreement to produce this chip.

It will take pretty much that long to make such a chip so thinking about it wouldn\'t do them any good.

The reason Toshiba and IBM are involves is for utilization of each others technology,  but more importantly is the mainstreaming of this new technology. With IBM, Toshiba, and Sony all putting these chips into major appliances and computers etc... It will be alot easier for the mainstream to recognize the technology and from there it can take root and grow.

The idea with these chips go way beyond the Playstation 3

Huh? It is the PS3 for christ sake, it will be a full generation ahead. I would hope it could out perform the Xbox. But, then if MS releases a Xbox2, I guess we will have to wait for a PS4 to call it the Xbox 2 killer? This makes no sense to me. As for the Toy story graphics comment, didn\'t Sony promise that with the PS2? ;)

Why are you people worried about games 5 years in the future? And why are you worrying if it will "kill the xbox"? It is 4-5 years away!

On another note; anyone who has been gaming for awhile should know that companies start working on the next system as soon as they release the current one. It is R&D.  Sony started work on the PS2 when the Psone was released.  And to be extreme about the point, the same will happen when the PS3 *is* released. Work on the "PS4" will start. This gives companies ample time to R&D (research and development), and stay ahead.
