In SH you can easily avoid monsters but you also want to get rid of them because they are disturbing you.

I want to kill them because they are disturbing me?

Why kill a monster that poses no threat?

In RE, sure you had to actually use your weapons, but that\'s because the monsters always posed a threat on your life.

Dont compare the way SH is trying to scare you as if its trying to scare you the same way the Resi is.

I\'m not.  SH provides you with a much greater safety net in that it really limits where it\'s monsters are.  Meaning, if you avoid those areas, you\'ll be fine.  I know I\'m rarely scared knowing that I only need to get past one monster, and get into the second door from the left, and there will be no more worries.  In RE (again, mainly in the first two, much less so in the others) it was always a relief to actually make it to a save room.  After being chased by zombies/hunters/whatever, through three or so rooms when I don\'t have any health (or perhaps forgot to bring backup health - for the later games), I always beathed a sigh of relief upon hearing that save room music.  :)

I really don\'t consider those movies to be shock horror.  Perhaps a combination of shock, and creepiness.

But it\'s hardly about being scary anymore, at least for myself.  Resident Evil hasn\'t been all that scary (read: able to make me feel uneasy) since the original (and perhaps REmake), and the same goes for Silent Hill.

Play Invisible Mode in REMake...
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

heh heh i still remember this thread...and this was a good read...as it stands now i still very much enjoy the silent hill series,..i mean i can still throw in silent hill 2, 3, & 4,.(i liked that 1st person view concept in 4) at around 11:30 at night and still be a little disturbed by it...overall with me playing res 4(really impressed with that) i have both franchises at a tie,...i like \'em both...i wonder what silent 5 will be like on the next gen systems..yea you know it\'s comin...hmmm the more i think about it,..even with that resident evil 4 game,..i still like the silent hill series a tad better,..only because of how they introduce new characters with each episode and the stories are actually a bit more gripping in the psycological sense...

when you got to that otherworld in silent hill 3 in the warehouse with all that crazy imagery and the part towards the end of the game where you are in the church and you are at the part where you see only 2 pairs of what seems to be schoolgirl legs hanging from the ceiling? heh when you first played through that it was pretty intense, any game that can get me kinda shook late at night with my mental, gets big props from me,..and silent hill has done that with every game i\'ve played in the series...

Yep Silent Hill takes all the best elements of a psychological horror movie and puts them in the game in a very creative way.

Resident Evil had its own special atmosphere of death and rotten flesh nightmare of the living dead and monstrous mutations but that was Resi1 and 2. After that it went all too action, killing the claustrophobic feeling of it and overdoing it with stupid characters and a repeated scenario.

Resi4 improved on many aspects but the more you progressed in the game the more action packed it got. I probably died more times in 4 than in any other Resi game but thats because I was careless thanks to the action packed gameplay and so I didnt care if I died. Too many ammo and herbs. Puzzles were easier too. The Romero style music which was perfect for the series was replaced with cheesy action music. I had mixed feelings about it. For a resi game it wasnt what I expected though as a stand alone game it was very good.

CV had some superb ideas but at the same time the introduction of uninteresting characters and bosses(Ashford? Steve? the twins\' father, Ashford\'s sister?-Resi2 had probably the best monsters) terrible voice acting, same old monsters, and some weird plot ideas and twists that didnt fit with the Resident Evil world ruined a  game that otherwise would have been a masterpiece.

I felt a similar thing in SH4 as with Resi4. I liked it at the end but there were a few things I thought that should have been removed or improved. That game should have been made on a next gen console. The concept was great.

On the lowest difficulty setting yes.

But RE wins for me because I think of it like this. Every Silent Hill game sucked as has every RE game prior to RE4. Therefore RE wins just because RE4 was one of the best games of last year. Simple logic.

And yes RE1-3 blew nuts off I still don\'t know how people could put up with those god awful controls and lame puzzles. Silent Hill...like lic said on the first page...a boring foggy mess.

Seeing as I didn\'t play it on the lowest difficulty settings (nor do I play ANY games on the lowest difficulty settings), you are incorrect.

I also normally start games on the difficulty setting above normal. Though, I\'m not sure what level I played RE4 on. Regardless, it was a walk in the park, and ridiculously so.

Ok, so my potential vote has been hacked somehow before i could make it. but ow well...I\'ll just say that imo the SH series is NOT overrated, although not all SH games are equally good.

Personally, I\'ll stick with SH2.

- one of the first PS2 games to feature proper realtime light & shadow system ; which was integral to the exploration gameplay. It\'s funny, becuz it did this before SplinterCell 1 (Xbox).

- The hybrid 3D camera & controls ; suiting the genre, but doing it a bit more refined. Melee combat & shooting is not objective #1 so it\'s only logic that James doesn\'t handle that all that great.

- The metaphorical leveldesign. Pure genius. I think Eisenstein would have loved the \'set\'. James descends deeper and deeper into the abyss of his mind. The levels make this litterally real for him and the player.
There are also so many connotations on so many levels in the environs and what can be found there.

- The story is imho similair to the effect of the Sixth Sense, but it branches out so many paths more & deeeper. It 1ups that movie.

- After first playthrough the game left me depressed ( in a good way ? ) for a coupla days. Marketing bs or not ; Along with Ico this was PS2\'s Emotion Engine becoming truth.

- Pyramid Head ; nuff said. :thumb:
