Silent Hill, definitely.
I absolutely loved Resident Evil, liked Resident Evil 2, thought number 3 was crap and ended up selling it before finishing it (very rare in my case), managed to get through CV because I couldn\'t get enough of the crappy acting (crappy being a word too subtle to use here, really). Got Resident Evil 0 and thought it would be more like the original and get me hooked on the series again, bah.
Silent Hill, then, has just gotten better and better. The original rocked my world, number 2 wasn\'t as creepy, but just as gripping, and number three just took me by the scruff of my neck, shook me about and convinced me that the team behind the series is a bunch of (sick) gurus who deserve my utmost respect.
In detail :
Locations :
Resident Evil : Mansions, secret laboratories, military complexes, nothing that really hasn\'t been seen somewhere else a million times. It\'s basic and familiar, so maybe that\'s why many people like it.
Silent Hill : A town. A secluded town with a murky history. Sure, we\'ve seen almost all the locations that are featured before too, but the duality of the place, all the little details and the history that is uncovered along the way really puts many other fictional settings to shame. Most of the locations are everyday places, so that in a way brings the horror closer to you.
Mood :
Resident evil : "BOO! I\'m zombie, me eat brain! You have brain? Graar!"
Silent Hill : "What the hell was that sound? ... I want to get the heck outta here..."
Gameplay :
I just find it funny that a bunch of civilians seem to be more adept at fighting than highly-trained special forces, but then again, they\'re games by different companies. Much of Resident Evil\'s horror (? panic, more like) to me consists of the fact the you\'re controlling a really, really clumsy dummy.
Sound/Presentation :
Resident Evil : Crappy acting for most of the games, zombie sounds like you\'d imagine them, slimy noises, moody background music. Nothing surprising. Some of the monster designs were pretty cool (in RE2 at least). RE0 had pretty graphics too, I guess...
Silent Hill : Surprisingly good acting (save for a few characters), loud static, hellish noises all around, silence, footsteps upstairs, silence, all hell breaks loose, great music. Best sound desing in any game series ever. The monsters are odd, and sometimes too strange to be really scary, but they all are the way they are for a reason, which brings me to the fact that most intrigues me in SH; there\'re dozens and dozens of little details and aspects with hidden (or obvious) meanings related to the stories. But still, there\'s a bit too much fog to go around, at least in SH3, eep. There\'s wasn\'t much of it though, thankfully.
Etcetc... Hawky luvs his SH.
