Silent Hill series Vs Resident Evil series
« on: June 28, 2003, 07:54:08 AM »
Which series do u prefer and why?

Personally I prefer the SH series for the following reasons:

1.Unlike Resident Evil every Silent Hill features a plot with mistery. You dont know whats going on on the sequels because of the first. In Resident Evil the first one\'s plot was amazing at first because it raised questions and mystery. The story was still a maiden. But after u find out ,it was all thanks to Umbrella experimenting on creating the ultimate biological weapon and a terrible accident that went things out of control the story exists only as an excuse for the existence of sequels. You automatically know 3/4 of the Sequels\' plot. Each SH though maintains a freshness.

2.The controls are a lot more comfortable.

3.You identify with the character. In the Residen Evil series we observe the character and as observers we understand a tragic irony(we know things the protagonist doesn\'t) if there is any.In Silent Hill you play the role of the tragic character. You meet characters in the game that play a significant part in the plot but the game never reveals what that is.It makes you wonder. It forces you to make your own conclusions for the tragic irony you dont know about. For example as Harry you never know the connection of your "daughter" with the town and you dont know your integral importance into Dahlia\'s plans. Also you can only assume about Kauffman\'s almost unrevealed role in the game and his past as well as other characters\'.

4.Similarly to the 3rd reason I prefer SH is that the story isnt appeared just like that. Its not a one way approach. An approach the writer of the story wants you to see.Istead of making u see it just like the director\'s approach it lets you approach it the way YOU see it.
Its like comparing the Resident Evil movie with The Ring.

5.The Horror.SH plays with your own fears and subconciousness.

6.The sound. No other game reaches SH in terms of sound. Its a work of art.

I voted for Silent Hill.

The graphics, atmosphere and music/sound effects are above anything else in it\'s genre IMO.

Resident Evil ... ugh.  That series needs to die.

In the survival horror genre it\'s the atmosphere that is most important, and Silent Hill simply dwarfs puny RE in that category.  At least in SH you feel as though you are controlling a character who is trying to survive the horror.

As apposed to what?

I didnt vote because honestly i dont know. See it really depends on where you are coming from. The RE series is... how should i put this, more of a threaded conpiracy whereas SH is more supernatural than RE in some sense. RE was a breakthrough game and i think it remained fairly good until code veronica. 3 was ok but 1-2 (and the directors cuts) were great. I do like both but I think the reason that People begin to hate RE is because Capcom is milking it for every penny they can suck out of it. Whilst SH remains pure and most importantly, innovative.

Well to make it short this about waps up my 2 cents for now, so i dont vote.

Silent Hill, definitely.

I absolutely loved Resident Evil, liked Resident Evil 2, thought number 3 was crap and ended up selling it before finishing it (very rare in my case), managed to get through CV because I couldn\'t get enough of the crappy acting (crappy being a word too subtle to use here, really). Got Resident Evil 0 and thought it would be more like the original and get me hooked on the series again, bah.

Silent Hill, then, has just gotten better and better. The original rocked my world, number 2 wasn\'t as creepy, but just as gripping, and number three just took me by the scruff of my neck, shook me about and convinced me that the team behind the series is a bunch of (sick) gurus who deserve my utmost respect.

In detail :

Locations :

Resident Evil : Mansions, secret laboratories, military complexes, nothing that really hasn\'t been seen somewhere else a million times. It\'s basic and familiar, so maybe that\'s why many people like it.

Silent Hill : A town. A secluded town with a murky history. Sure, we\'ve seen almost all the locations that are featured before too, but the duality of the place, all the little details and the history that is uncovered along the way really puts many other fictional settings to shame. Most of the locations are everyday places, so that in a way brings the horror closer to you.

Mood :

Resident evil : "BOO! I\'m zombie, me eat brain! You have brain? Graar!"

Silent Hill : "What the hell was that sound? ... I want to get the heck outta here..."

Gameplay :

I just find it funny that a bunch of civilians seem to be more adept at fighting than highly-trained special forces, but then again, they\'re games by different companies. Much of Resident Evil\'s horror (? panic, more like) to me consists of the fact the you\'re controlling a really, really clumsy dummy.

Sound/Presentation :

Resident Evil : Crappy acting for most of the games, zombie sounds like you\'d imagine them, slimy noises, moody background music. Nothing surprising. Some of the monster designs were pretty cool (in RE2 at least). RE0 had pretty graphics too, I guess...

Silent Hill : Surprisingly good acting (save for a few characters), loud static, hellish noises all around, silence, footsteps upstairs, silence, all hell breaks loose, great music. Best sound desing in any game series ever. The monsters are odd, and sometimes too strange to be really scary, but they all are the way they are for a reason, which brings me to the fact that most intrigues me in SH; there\'re dozens and dozens of little details and aspects with hidden (or obvious) meanings related to the stories. But still, there\'s a bit too much fog to go around, at least in SH3, eep. There\'s wasn\'t much of it though, thankfully.

Etcetc... Hawky luvs his SH.

Silent Hill is a Resident Evil ripoff.

There is just something about Resident Evil that leaves me so intrigued. I love the whole biohazard concept, and I know its been done before in movies etc, but its the first real game I ever played that really scared the hell outta me.

I think Resident Evil Code Veronica on Dreamcast was one of the best RE games. The puzzles were more interesting, it was bloodier and had much better graphics. Silent Hill to me doesn\'t make sense, I still don\'t fully understand what its all about. Like, the first one was about a car accident or something, and no its like WTF?

I hardly think this poll proves anything. You would need to look up indiviual sales for each title. I\'m to lazy to look and honestly I don\'t know which one is selling more.
