The PS2 is thew 1st step in Sonys architexture which is being made and tuned to the specific function of playing Videogames
I guess if the PS3 comes close to hitting the target of being 1000 x\'s more pwoerful then its safe to say a PIII or PowerPC processor won\'t be up to the task
Will Intel or AMD have a PC processor pwoerful enough to maintain that easy to develop for angle or WIll MS and Nintendo be forced to find a more powerful alternative processor to kepp up and lose that easy to program for angle they are banking on this generation, cause SOny\'s architexture will be quite familiar by PS3
Food for thought
You mean like the non-80x86 Architecture (Not Merced) but Mckinley? In five years we should have processors using the McKinley architecture averaging around 7-10 Ghz. Mckinley is light years ahead of everything as far as floating point and its not Cisc or Risc, but VLIW where all the branch decisions are done via the compiler and the CPU is just raw floating point and arithmetic. NV65 or NV70 with a McKinley chip will be unstoppable, absolutely no limits with at least 700 megs to 1 gigabyte of ram. The main aim will be HDTV at this point. Nothing stops in this industry boys... Things just get faster... Gigabit console connection will be in there as well.
You honestly don\'t think that Sony will kick ass while everyone else sits on their ass do you? If thats what you think, you are in for the suprise of your life.
oh by the way, the PS3 is going to be more PC like than ever before. So you will be able to use Sony Office to do your word processing and all of your PS3 needs will be met through the Sony OS.
More like can Sony keep up with everyone else. Have you seen software that uses the PS2 100 percent? Will you see that by the time PS3 comes out, the answer to all of this is NOPE.
The PS3 will be more advanced and offer an even more horrible architecture with new stuff to stumble over... errr I mean explore.
Sony didn\'t innovate, they just bastardised SGI RISC chip and put a marketing term on it, so that people like you would think its something innovative.
Its all about perspective....
So far the PS2 can\'t kick anyones ass but maybe the PSX...
