if it is a bad RPG with poor characters and typical story it can make me go mad too, ( for example, any RPG on DC other than Skies of arcadia or Grandia2 )
I agree, but random battles are just as bad as lame stories IMO.
Granda2 is a good example to look at this. it has EXTREMLY boring dungens. and the fights look good but they are toooooo easy to beat all the time which makes it a bit irrelivant what fighting moves you choose.( usually i only die by acident or poor attension, for example like forgeting to replesh my health ). but what makes up for all that is the story. i think the story in grandia2 was well written and presented, and most of the characters are OK. i hated Merg and the lead character because they were sooo predictable and had stupid things to say all the time. but i liked the other ones ( elena, mellinia, and the robot girl. elena representing the good side, mellinea representing evil and the robot girl just being navie all the time and learning how to deal with stuff , sort of like vivi in FF9 ). which were well played, despite they felt silly sometimes.
Yeah, respite what some other people might say, I really like Grandia 2\'s story. Awesome character development was the key.
So the only reason grandia2 was worth it for me is the story and characters. but i can still see that they put a lot of work in the battel system ( they tried to be innovative ) , but it was still too easy. The dungens ( specially the last few ones ) were soo long and boring to death, but it makes up for that by having a true 3D navigational environment which is alright. so the game has upps and downs but the story really makes it intresting.
The game was actually quite difficult if you didn\'t spend any time on training(I know the typical RPG usually has training and leveling up a focus, but it was nice to break away for once). Basically, I ran by every enemy I saw, except the ones I had to faced. I didn\'t really struggle at the beginning but once I fought Valmar\'s eye then I realized the joy of good old-school competition. Since I decided not to train, the eye kicked my ass a few times. Instead of running off to fight enemies for exp points, I kept going at him. I lossed, and lossed, but eventually I got Millenia to go all psycho and helped me through. I felt good after that fight, knowing that I didn\'t train AT all and still triumphed by using strategy.
I guess that\'s one of the reasons why I would consider Grandia 2 to be my favorite RPG-challenge. I\'ve been a natural gamer since I started playing, there was never a game that I couldn\'t and probably never will beat. RPGs are just so simple for me. Spend some time leveling up, figuring your way though boring and pathetically easy dungeons, listen to the story, that\'s all an RPG is for me. Usually I play to get to the end but in Grandia 2 I really wanted to earn it.
Yes, to the average RPG fan Grandia 2 is child\'s play, but if you decide to avoid all enemies then its actually quite challenging, and I love overcoming challenges. And any RPG couldn\'t have that effect with me like Grandia 2. Random battles and waiting would have driven me mad. But it\'s battle system was a blast and very fun.
I wouldn\'t have enjoyed Grandia 2 as much as I did if I trained though...
if you are really bored with working your way in RPGs because the story isn\'t intresting and haven\'t ever played chrono triger, then please do ASAP and you will be owned by that sweet game. trust me.
Chrono Trigger is my second favorite RPG of all time, I know the brilliance of that game.
Unlike you i was really bored with Vagrat Story, despite the VERY intresting plot, the gamplay didn\'t cut it for me
You misunderstood me. I meant to say that even though it\'s gamplay wasn\'t that good, the story kept me playing. After I beat it though then I was all done with it and sold it...
