Yea it is genre and I agree with Jumpman....

Press, wait, press, wait.... kill the enemy, level up! walk, press, wiat... read 3 hours of text that doesnt mant.. press and guess what wait again

Yea they have depth but they do get boring cuase they usually are like 20 hours long... I had to go with shooter.. they have no depth usually (excepth red factiobn) but tehy still are the funnest..

"like reading a book" reading sucks! lol sorry but i HATE RPGS

Geez, I\'m surprised that the "Games that combine ideas from more than one gener" isn\'t winning. RPGs get boring after a while IMO. Press, wait, press, wait, press, wait, walk through a boring dungeon, enemy appears from nowhere, press, wait, press, wait, and this keeps repeating.
[/b]
this is absolutly true, and without the story or the characters that you get attached to, RPGs would be a complette disaster. thanx to great characters or story, you get attached to the theme and you start to actually care about the outcome of the story so you strugle with fighting and moving around discovering the world which lets you reveal more intreaging details about the story and how it folds up. mystery is what makes it intresting, the more unbredictable the story the better. cute or lovable characters also make it worth while. also nice jokes make it worthwhile.

i voted for RPGs BTW.

if it is a bad RPG with poor characters and typical story it can make me go mad too, ( for example, any RPG on DC other than Skies of arcadia or Grandia2 ).

Granda2 is a good example to look at this. it has EXTREMLY boring dungens. and the fights look good but they are toooooo easy to beat all the time which makes it a bit irrelivant what fighting moves you choose.( usually i only die by acident or poor attension, for example like forgeting to replesh my health ). but what makes up for all that is the story. i think the story in grandia2 was well written and presented, and most of the characters are OK. i hated Merg and the lead character because they were sooo predictable and had stupid things to say all the time. but i liked the other ones ( elena, mellinia, and the robot girl. elena representing the good side, mellinea representing evil and the robot girl just being navie all the time and learning how to deal with stuff , sort of like vivi in FF9 ).  which were well played, despite they felt silly sometimes.

So the only reason grandia2 was worth it for me is the story and characters. but i can still see that they put a lot of work in the battel system ( they tried to be innovative ) , but it was still too easy.  The dungens ( specially the last few ones ) were soo long and boring to death, but it makes up for that by having a true 3D navigational environment which is alright. so the game has upps and downs but the story really makes it intresting.

same here, except in special cases when i had to redo FF8 so that i can get all the GFs and the quests.. or in chrono chross to see what hapens when you  **WARNING*SPOILER**WARNING*SPOILER** play in gameplus mode and beat your own characters after linux steals you body. in the end, you get at least 60 to 80 hours of actuall gameplay, which is quite higher than many other genres ( not the highest but still above average ). when you compare it with onumushi which can be completted in a couple of hours you understand what i mean.

if you are really bored with working your way in RPGs because the story isn\'t intresting and haven\'t ever played chrono triger, then please do ASAP and you will be owned by that sweet game. trust me.

I was gonna put it as RPG\'s but then I thought my expereince of them doesnt go much further than Final Fantasy so I put racing. I have had heaps of racing games over the years.

I agree with that to a certain extent. There are games that have such magnificant stories that I have the urge to keep playing even though the gameplay gets repiditive(examples: FF7 and Vagrant Story). But sometimes the repeditiveness overwhelmes me and I just can\'t continue any more(examples: Xenogears, FF8 and 9, and Chrono Cross, I just couldn\'t stand the random battles and boring gameplay).

I\'ll finish this post later when I\'m not so lazy.

I really hate random battels tooo... i\'m playing FF6 now and they suck big time. it\'s a shame they use it in all Final Fantasies.

but chrono triger/cross you could avoid a lot of the encounters and there are no encounters on the main map too which is neat, i wish they do this with FFX.

Unlike you i was really bored with Vagrat Story, despite the VERY intresting plot, the gamplay didn\'t cut it for me, First issue was the puzels. i\'m not a big fan of puzels and unfourtinantly, puzels are a big part of vagrant story, so you keep running into them which annoye dme. and fighting was average Thanx to those ghosts that keeps running away and disapearing and appearing in the least expected places which are unrechable by normal weapons. i also did not do any experiments with the weapon management system which i heard was one of the highlights of the game. I wish i can have the patience with that ghost and the silly puzels to reveal the story of this game. In the begining of the game i was able to take care of the ghosts. but when they decided to make a habit of appearing in groups of two or more on the same screen i just couldn\'t i can\'t take any more **** from them. I think that was the last of my attempts to go further than the 3rd or so dungen. those nasty ghosts , i can\'t get them off my mind...

Foootball=sports which i forgot to put, like action/adventur which includes stealth i guess such as MGS2 ( i think i am a sad case ). maybe i should make another poll sometime and include them. but it\'s too confusing to have 2 polls on the same subject i guess so i would wait a couple of years ( or should i wait a couple of decades? )

I agree, but random battles are just as bad as lame stories IMO.

Yeah, respite what some other people might say, I really like Grandia 2\'s story. Awesome character development was the key.

The game was actually quite difficult if you didn\'t spend any time on training(I know the typical RPG usually has training and leveling up a focus, but it was nice to break away for once). Basically, I ran by every enemy I saw, except the ones I had to faced. I didn\'t really struggle at the beginning but once I fought Valmar\'s eye then I realized the joy of good old-school competition. Since I decided not to train, the eye kicked my ass a few times. Instead of running off to fight enemies for exp points, I kept going at him. I lossed, and lossed, but eventually I got Millenia to go all psycho and helped me through. I felt good after that fight, knowing that I didn\'t train AT all and still triumphed by using strategy.

I guess that\'s one of the reasons why I would consider Grandia 2 to be my favorite RPG-challenge. I\'ve been a natural gamer since I started playing, there was never a game that I couldn\'t and probably never will beat. RPGs are just so simple for me. Spend some time leveling up, figuring your way though boring and pathetically easy dungeons, listen to the story, that\'s all an RPG is for me. Usually I play to get to the end but in Grandia 2 I really wanted to earn it.

Yes, to the average RPG fan Grandia 2 is child\'s play, but if you decide to avoid all enemies then its actually quite challenging, and I love overcoming challenges. And any RPG couldn\'t have that effect with me like Grandia 2. Random battles and waiting would have driven me mad. But it\'s battle system was a blast and very fun.

I wouldn\'t have enjoyed Grandia 2 as much as I did if I trained though...

Chrono Trigger is my second favorite RPG of all time, I know the brilliance of that game.

You misunderstood me. I meant to say that even though it\'s gamplay wasn\'t that good, the story kept me playing. After I beat it though then I was all done with it and sold it...

I like the elusive \'good game genre\' myself..

Although, if pressed to choose, I do tend to lean towards the \'THQ-grapple-based-wrestling-games genre.\'  ;]
