PS2 king of 2D graphics....?
« on: June 20, 2001, 08:51:27 AM »
Read somewhere that PS2, surprisingly, can churn out 2D sprites unlike anything else in the past, present and future systems! Best 2D rendering machine! But...
IGN made a comment regarding GuiltyGearX, that PS2 has to scaledown on the hires output of the DC GG....

IGN said...
The PlayStation 2 version will hopefully be identical to its Dreamcast and Naomi counterparts, but a couple of hurdles potentially stand in the way. There is, for example, the ever-present limitation of the PlayStation 2\'s VRAM -- it\'s proving to be less and less of a problem as developers get the hang of the system, but 2D fighters will always demand a large amount of RAM to store animation frames, and PS2\'s four megabytes may cause trouble despite the amount of bandwidth available to shove stuff in and out. The other question has to do with video output. The Naomi/DC version uses the hardware\'s high-resolution 640 x 480 frame buffer to produce its super-sharp look (in conjunction with high-res character graphics), which means some modifications to the sprites will be necessary to adapt to the PS2\'s different high-res mode.

Well we can have a comparison when the dc and ps2 version of snk vs. capcom 2 comes out.  This should be interesting.

i heard about this somewhere. it could do alot with  2d graphics, but i would like to see them do god things with this ablity. the game Age of Empires 2 :Age of Kings
works on sprites, and i would like to see extra spriets added for better realism.

many people think sprites are only used in fighters, well, they have widespread use,  and that may come o help the ps2 in the future:D
IM BACK. you have a problem with that? get in the back.

Did you know, the PS2 is faster at getting data from the main ram then the DC was at getting data from the Vram.  Plus, the PS2 has no Vram... in case people keep missing that point.  It uses a super fast frame buffer.  Which isn\'t meant to act as storage for any long period time. (anything over 1/30th of a frame)

Technically it has 4MB VRAM, but developers soon found that using it as a frame buffer gave ALOT better results. Streaming textures etc in and out of the frame buffer many times a second gives the PS2 a lot graphical power.  We are only just seeing developers using this. Games like Jak and Daxter will be using it to the extreme! The PS2 also has the highest fill rate of any of the next gen consoles. Particle effects are one of the PS2\'s specialities. The PS2 is bandwidth rich! Which is great for solid 60fps frame rates. (can you remmember the silent hill 2 guy saying that they where trying there hardest to get the Xbox version of SH2 to run at a decent frame rate :D )
Playing: GTA3 (96%) - Pro Evo Soccer
Wanted: HALO - MGS2 - JSRF - VF4 - FFX - SC2 - PROJECT EGO - TS2

Technically, it has a "frame buffer" actually.  And devolopers were using it as Vram (incorrectly).  It was never meant to be anything but a holding area for frame data.  Thats why it has a insane bandwidth.

yeah, i heard about halo having trouble (runnign at 30 fps) but that was on unfinished devs.. i was always wondering why it had such high bandwith.

heh heh, have you ever heard of cut and paste :p

And what makes the PS.2\'s CPU so good is just the pure raw performance. The CPU it self is just a plain MIPS variant, but the system isn\'t designed to use one central processor, the CPU and the GS work with the vector units (they are basically just FPU\'s)

aww hell just read >>this<< article,it\'s the most informative PS.2 article out there.
