I fixed my PS2 myself!!
« on: July 02, 2001, 01:28:05 PM »
Hey, if you remember a while back I was one of the guys suffering from a PS2 that wouldn\'t read the Cd formats, or for some DVD formats.  A friend of mine showed me how to take a PS2 apart just so I could take a look at mine and try to figure it out myself.  Hey, I\'m not willing to pay $120 just to fix this problem that should of never shown up.

Basically when I opened it up I immediately knew the problem.  The CD lens was covered in dust.  I thought I kept my system pretty dang clean too.  Well, I cleaned it off and I haven\'t had any problems since.  This may not be the problem for all of you out there, but just in case I would suggest buying a CD/DVD lens cleaner.  They\'re pretty cheap and all that it does is it basically has a small brush on the disk, so when it goes in and spins the brush cleans the lens.  They work great.

WHAT A RELIEF THIS IS!!  I hope that this may help some of you guys out there having problem.  Too bad all of these months I\'ve been stuck playing only DVD based games...atleast I still got to watch movies on it...

Are you sure they dont scratch the lens??
I have one of those.. (pretty old!)
And I think that the brush might be to "stiff"!

I mean a  DVD lense is pretty sencitive..

I\'m going to open up my Toshiba DVD player and look for things to fix.  The damn piece of cr@p is long out of warranty, and it\'s useless as is, so I have nothing to lose.  I have another sony DVD player on order, but I\'d like to restore this machine to working order so it can be handed down to a friend of mine.

BTW, I don\'t think I\'d use one of those CD lens cleaner disks under any circumstances.  If your PS2 is still under warranty, get it fixed for free.  If it\'s out of warranty, open the case and clean the lens manually.  I\'d much rather apply cleaning brush strokes to the lens by hand than let the drive motor do it for me.  Who knows what could happen.

I bought one of those compressed air thingy\'s and it sorta worked.....but I still can\'t play some of my old PS games....(doesn\'t help that a few of them are scratched to hell)

Anyways, I think I\'ll finally give the disk cleaner thing a try...I know we have one around here somewhere...

how does the lens become covered in dust n the first place? You only open the drive for maybe 3-5 seconds.  So how does the dust get in there?

How else the dust can get on the lens?  The dust must have been on the  disc and got on the lens.  :D

I was kind of curious as to how the dust got there too.  So, I just assume it came off the CDs just a little bit and over time it kind of covered the lens.  Maybe...

I don\'t know what you guys are talking about a CD lens cleaner scratching.  Atleast the one that I have the brush bristles are so soft that there\'s no way it would scratch it.  Maybe it\'s just mine though......

Oh, at first I couldn\'t actually get the CD disc to spin, just because it wouldn\'t detect it, remember.  So after a little bit of opening my CD tray and then closing it again so the disc would do a few more of those half turns and brush over the lens a just a couple of times the disc was finally detected and started to spin.  So, it the cleaned off the lens for me and has worked perfect ever since!!  Mind you, this is while a had my PS2 apart though...

I hope this works out for some of you guys out there with the problems.

Dust is everywhere, we don\'t notice it til the particles gather together to be able to be seen by the naked eye.  The opening and closing of the tray creates a tiny little pressure change that tends to suck in air, and dust inside the system.  Plus it\'s not like the PS2 is air tight.
