More Dreamcast price reductions
« on: July 25, 2001, 10:22:44 AM »
I think I might finally buy one soon...
Quote
Gaudiosi, John.  "Dreamcast price to drop" Hollywood Reporter. 7/25/01, p. 8.

In an effort to sell through its remaining stock of Dreamcast hardware units, Sega will reduce the price to $79.99 on Aug. 14, retailers and analysts said. Sega also will introduce additional $19.99 titles to its All-Star lineup, including such games as "NBA 2K1" and "NFL 2K1."

"After the initial price drop to $79.99, Sega has told us that they will further reduce the price of Dreamcast to $49.99 either around Christmas or early next year, depending on how much inventory they have left over," said Doreen McKenzie, director of merchandising and video games at Babbage\'s Etc., a leading specialty video game retailer.

"Although we\'re already ahead for the year with Dreamcast sales, the drop to $79.99 will double our current monthly sales," Electronics Boutique vp Pete Roithmayr said. "When you think about the Dreamcast system selling for $49.99 next January, it\'s almost scary."

...

Heading into November, when Sony faces competition from Microsoft\'s Xbox and Nintendo\'s Gamecube, analysts and retailers don\'t expect Sony to reduce the price of PlayStation2.

"With the inclusion of a DVD player in PlayStation2, Sony is loathe to drop the price because console game manufacturers are experiencing severe hardware profit blues," Bruehl said. "I expect Sony to reduce the price of the recently released "Gran Turismo 3" PlayStation2 from $329 to $299, essentially offering a free game with the system."

Ya\' know, its a sad day when supposed "gamers" wait until a great system dies and the company is havin\' to sell it at a dirt cheap price before they buy one.

The DC may of not died if people wouldn\'t of sat back and waited until this happened. Sorta like the Neo-GEO Pocket situation, isn\'t it?

I\'m sorry and this is totally of my character to say. But that is just disgusting...I\'m sure others \'round here will agree (Altered,etc)..

Yeah, I agree.

But I also have the opinion that these people don\'t deserve to know true games and excitement when games first come out. Let them have their 50 dollar Dreamcasts, I would buy another for 200 dollars right now if mine broke (like so many PS2\'s already have) easily.

"gamers" :rolleyes:

So you are only "gamers" if you buy a Dreamcast for the full price at launch?? I was getting my share of "true games" with my N64 when the DC came out, so I didn\'t buy one. I also couldn\'t afford to support two consoles at once. Now Sega\'s deducting the price so people can easily afford the DC. Good move, if they want to get rid of their inventory. So is there anything wrong with people flocking to the dirt cheap prices if that\'s Sega\'s purpose in doing it??

No of course not.

It is the fact many of the people on this board proclaim themselves \'hardcore\'. Praising Sega games (or downing on them all them time) then when the price is right, after the system is successfully dead, buys into the games.

People like you piss me off.

I was not a console gamer at all before March 2001 when I bought my PS2.  I only had PCs before that.  Now the quality of PS2 releases has satisfied me and I\'m looking to branch out.  Sorry if I\'m a little late to the Dreamcast party, but I had barely even heard of it before March.

Still I can sympathize with those who can\'t afford to or simply don\'t want to support more than one system concurrently.  Fortunately I don\'t have that problem.  :D

I\'ve never proclaimed myself "hardcore." I consider myself a normal person who enjoys gaming as a hobby. I praise Sega games because they\'re some of the most excellent games I\'ve seen; sadly, I haven\'t been able to afford them. And like I said before, I can\'t support two systems at once. So I can\'t help but get excited when the prices come down to a range that\'s practical for me, because now I may be able to indulge in some of the best experiences in gaming that I otherwise might have missed.

But serously Altered, that line was uncalled for. He never claimed to be a hardcore gamer(in fact he claimed to be a Nintendo fanboy at one point), and he simply cannpt afford more than one system. Why so harsh?

Wow..

That is sad and shocking news. With the greatness of the DC I never thought a day like this would come. Hell, I never thought the DC would die. I honestly saw it up there battling for ranks against the other consoles.... a pity and a shame.

LoL, MM. Make that three that agree.

A price drop announced so soon after I decided to blow almost $240+ on my DC + Games & Accessories, and news that it will hit a 50 dollar price tag in the not too distant future...

Eh, dosen\'t phase me a bit. I saved a hundred dollars by waiting this long, and the enjoyment I\'m getting outta the console more than makes up for the other 50 bucks I could have saved. I still say get a DC now if you haven\'t already got one, it really is worth the green.

I think there is a distinct difference in not being able to afford a system when it is out and waiting until the system is failed and down to the lowest as possible to get it.

There is a big difference. I understand people who could not afford one at launch. I do not agree with people who have been sittin\' around WAITING for this price drop, just because they don\'t want to part with their money.

I for one, never, ever considered buying a DC.  Sega left me hangin\' with Genesis and 32x and I wasn\'t about to let that happen again!

But. . . and this is a big but, with the price drop, I might just go out an buy one.

It\'s a smart marketing ploy for people like me in mind.
