PS2 as a DVD player?

I do not see one line graph, frequency level reading, or s/n ratio test.

...now you are on my level THX... that´s all I wanna say !!! You can´t SEE it ! It does not interest me if there´s a graph or whatever... I can SEE that the picture (with rgb -> as I´m European, I can only tell for the things I know from where I life... ;) ) on the PS2 is as good as on a 450$ Stand-Alone DVD Player. The only diff. is in the extra goodies you get out of this Player (build in 5.1 decoder, zoom, low noise houseing, codefree, playback of DVD-R or Music-DVDs etc.)

To bring this to an end: For the normal (not high-end) user, the PS2 is the best way to enjoy the brilliant DVD picture and sound... PLUS have some fun in playing great games... I guess there´s no boubt in that ?! :D

I don\'t care about a high-end DVD player. My PS2 works just fine. I\'m not the kind of person that uses all of the options anyway. Although I like to watch X-Men in French sometimes...:D Funny as heck.

But to answer your Quuestion "is it worth it", of course it is. Its PS2 your buying. Pluss an adiquet DVD player as well.

DVD is alot better than VHS, thats why it\'s worth more.

You don\'t need to rewind or fast-forward, the deleted scenes are worth checking out if you have alot of time on your hands like i do...bleh..
if all you wanna do is see the movie though, and if you\'re not fussed about how sophisticated the features are, the ps2 would be a decent DVD player. I already have my own multi regional DVD player though, and am still considering the ps2 for the sake of games. so it all depends on how fussy you are...

The picture is way better, there is no d**m thing called "tracking", you can switch to any scene that you want, at any time (not having to rewind or fast-forward to your favorite part of the movie), you don\'t have to rewind it when you\'re done, you get cool options (behind-the-scenes, interviews, hidden scenes, etc...). I could go on why DVD is so much better. Plus VHS gets old over time and the tracking only gets worse. With DVD, I can just use my trusty scratch remover (which I don\'t use that often because I don\'t destroy my things).

Plus...you don\'t need multiple tapes to watch a long movie, because there is so much space on the DVD, you can have it all on one disc.

I don\'t like VHS anymore, but it\'s always good to have it handy, just in case...;)

VHS??
Buy Gladiator or SPR, put it in your PS2 then plug a good sound system in and tell me DVD\'s aren\'t worth it :D

I have 2 DVD players, PS2 is as good as my £300 player.

I think it is cool, i wouldn\'t have bought a DVD player alone, I would by a DVD player if it cost $100, and when i say that, a really good DVD player for that money. :D

If on the other hand a DVD player could serve as a recording device like a VCR i would have bought one a long time ago, instead of buying a PS2 and getting one in the box...

A very huge DVD website or mag did a testing on the best DVD players. PS2 was LAST as a DVD player, they said a cheap 99 dollar one could increase the quality more than 50% Its not up to par with almost any DVD player in the last 2 years.

A friend of mine owns a "big" entertainment system (10.000$) and last wekend we connected the PS2 to it... guess what ?!
NO diff. between his 600$ stand-alone DVD Player and the PS2 !!!
..and the Games looked great on that Plasma TV :D !

PS2 as a DVD player?

I know someone who sold their PS2 the week after it launched for like $350. During the time he owned it, he played some of my DVDs. After he sold it, he took the money and bought a $150 DVD player.

He took that back too as he found out the hard way that the PS2 DVD player was a midrange quality DVD player and the cheap stand alone DVD player he got was no better than his VCR.

This was last year, fall of 2000, where as I mentioned before, the PS2 was of midrange quality. At the time the PS2 was revealed to the public(February of 2000), it was among the best DVD player out there. This year, with technology advancing at its current pace and computer chips getting cheaper, the quality of the PS2 as a DVD player certainly has its shortcomings. But what did you expect by this time?

BTW, my friend who sold his PS2 bought another. :D
