Do you like to read books ?
« on: August 05, 2001, 10:49:43 PM »
Well, I\'m not such a big reader myself. I remember highschool
literature lists, such a pain in the ass. But I believe kids are
gonna dislike it more if teachers ORDER to read such huge lists.
Voluntarely reading is still the best imo.
My favourite book is \'Het huis der onbekenden\' ( the house of the
unknown ( no not you Unknown )) written by Jos Vandeloo. It\'s
a psycholical drama about a guy who suddenly doesn\'t recognize his own wife and kid anymore, and first assumes it\'s a practical joke from the kid\'s school. ( mixing the families up, that is ) It turns out this is not the case and his life takes a dramatic change. It\'s real good.

Also for my last graduation scription I\'ve been reading some books on videogames. \'Trigger Happy\' by Steven Poole and \'Jostick Nation\' by J.C. Herz. I like Trigger Happy especially.
Does anyone know some more good literature on videogames ?

I love literature - since the times of Enid Blyton\'s classic Five ( well, I don\'t know the english name, but just think of any Blyton\'s book ).

I\'ve been reading books since I was 5, but nowadays, I just can\'t find time for them. Sometimes I read trough nights, but I read much less than I used to.

I\'ve read many great books, but I can still list the most emotionally impact books.

Here\'s the list:

J.R.R. Tolkien\'s Lord of the Rings - by far the greatest Fantasy book I\'ve ever read. My fifth time going - it just sucks you up to it\'s world. I recommend to everybody - including those who think they don\'t like fantasy.

Frederick Pohl\'s Gateway - some say this is boring and slow-paced book, but they\'re so wrong. It\'s a psychological trip, and questions is it rightful to sacrifice many for one. Recommend to all sci-fi fans out there.

A.C. Clarke\'s Space Odyssey 2001 - a wonderful book. Masterpiece to say the least. Kubrick\'s film-version of this book was perhaps quite boring, but the book is whole different league.

J. Carcaterra\'s Sleepers - the true story about 4 boys, whom because of innocent prank have to face the coldness of the world. Great book - \'tho the story is... well... Emotionally very touching.

And some more.

Who gives a sh!t about TV, give me a good book any day.

all time favorite book(s)

Hyperion (all books) - Dan Simmons

other worthwhile contenders:

Time Ships - Stephen Baxter (all of his books are kick azz)
Orion - Ben Bova
Neuromancer - William Gibson
Darwins Radio
Eon - Greg Bear (all his books are great)
Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe ( do yourself a favor, read this :D )
The Damnation Game - Clive Barker

There are more, but why bother, not too many people read anyways, right?

I read (almost) every night before bed. My wife and I love reading together:)

She prefers horror and I prefer fantasy (dragons, magic, etc).

I love to read.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy - J. R. R. Tolkien
The Hobbit - J. R. R. Tolkien
The Foundation trilogy - Asimov
Hyperion - Dan Simmons
1984 - George Orwell
Weaveworld - Clive Barker
Neuromancer - William Gibson (he has written lots of other great cyberpunk stories too)

Those are the ones that stood out that I can remember as I type... there are many others worth a mention I\'m sure.

I read all the time. Clancy, Grisham, Cussler, Crichton, and many others. I\'ll read anything I can get my hands on, and I usually read the whole book in one day. I read pretty fast.

I read so much for my classes that I don\'t have the time to read for pleasure.  Just finished The Odyssey and the Illiad.

Hmmm...

Readers  -  Non readers
50 %   -   50 % ?

Some of you are quite fanatic bookreaders.
My problem ( if you wanna call it that way )
is that I read to slow and that my concentration
level is not that high.  When it comes to books
I\'m just destracted easily,  shame , maybe...

Anyway, I\'ve got no problem with books when
it comes to software books like Learning Maya
or topics that really interest me.
