Thoughts on cel-shaded Zelda..
« on: August 23, 2001, 04:58:38 AM »
Cel-shaded, Zelda. Weird? Yes. Interesting? Of course. Somewhat dissapointing? Depends.
It depends on how you look at it. Of course, I think all of us would of prefered something along the lines of the E3 Demo. Yet, we are not getting that.

I\'ll admit, at first I was out-raged. I thought Nintendo had done and killed a great franchise. My first reaction was somewhat along the same as when I heard Metriod would be a FPS - which by the way, is something I still refuse to accept . I was disgusted and pissed off. But then I went and downloaded the movie from IGN and I was surprised. Surpised that my disgust and anger went away. The cel-shaded cartoon look actually serves the Zelda enviroment quite well. Ryu mentioned in another thread that Zelda has always been somewhat comical and cartoon\'ish. He is totally right and this graphic style fits Zelda perfectly. Sure, I am still not thrilled that I can\'t tell if Link is a boy or girl - who knows, maybe Nintendo is hoping to have a cross gender Link and surprise us all yet again. :D

Yes, Nintendo has went and changed the graphic style. Yes, the E3 demo was freaking amazing. Everyone knows all this. It is also things that can\'t be changed. We now have a cel-shaded Zelda and, if I  can say, a damn impressive looking cel-shaded Zelda (well, \'cept for our cross-gender Link). Nintendo has made a lot worse choices in the past (Metriod!..Damn you ! ) . I ask you guys this also, was you not excited about the game when you heard about the possible innovations in gameplay? What if they are true? Are you still going to refuse to play this game, simply because it looks "funny" aka cel-shaded? I would hope not.

Does it matter though? I mean, anyone who has watched the video can\'t deny that it looks like an actual cartoon and is simply amazing. Even though we all hoped for something else it looks like Nintendo has taken cel-shading and done an excellent job with it. And in the end, it is just graphics. If you don\'t like cel-shading, I can almost gurantee that the actual gameplay will be fun . Something the Zelda series has always been known for.

If you haven\'t seen the video of it - I recommend you go to  http://cube.ign.com A.S.A.P and download it. Still pictures look crappy but when you see how fluid and the detail in the animation, it is quite stunning really.

It is a system shock to me, but i haven’t committed any big arguments pro/con on this... i have a wait and see attitude, maybe because i like Zelda, and hope it will play kick-Azz! ;)

After watching that video I really think Miyamoto is senile. I also think that he\'s extremely talented and very stupid. I don\'t think the mainstream public will like this at all.

If they changed Link design(maybe to a more anime look), then I might be able to bring myself to actually be interested in the game. But as long as he looks like a five year old fag, I want nothing to do with it.

More proof that Miyamoto has gone senile.

Apparently there will be no more Metroid footage because the game isn\'t up to his personal standards...he friggin releases new screens of AniMal Forest every day that moron.

I, for one, love it.  Zelda was originally designed with a cartoony type of concept in mind.  After playing the Oracle games thoroughly and going back and beating a Link to the Past, this is exactly how I would envision those 2D top view games, in 3D.  It maintains that sense of adventure and action while still looking like a fun game.  Sure, I\'ll admit that Link does look a bit fruity, but all that can change.  I mean, they do have a year a half to work on it. :)

The person I least expect this from.
Jumpman, you think Link looks like a "five year old" yet you think Pikimin or Pokemon are good? I mean, what are you smoking? They all have graphical appeal to kids. Yet, even Pokemon is a deep game if you play it. The same will apply with this Zelda - as always. So, you are saying, you\'ll deny yourself the chance to play a great game (more and likely it will be great) just because it looks childish?  That is some screwed up logic man. I can see it coming from a PS2 fanboy or something, but from a self-acclaimed Nintendo fan? Someone who defended Banjo-Tooie? I mean, how much more kiddish can get you? A talking bear and stork? Yet you are worried that Link looks like a "fag".

Yes, I played it. Put around 40 hours into Pokemon Silver actually. But none of those games have that "extreme kiddy feel". This Zelda reeks of it.

First of all, it looks EXTREMELY childish. And no, I probably will play it, but it just won\'t be the same.

This Zelda game proves that you can get much much more kiddish.

I\'m not just worried about Link, I\'m worried about all the characters. The enemies look gay.Zelda will probably look like this and Ganon, my fav villain, will probably look something similar to this too. That\'s not cool. I don\'t want the main bad guy to look like that, I\'d puke, honestly.

Change the characters design, and maybe I\'ll be more interested in this game. But dammit, Link looks gay. :( I was thinking about changing my name to Link when I hit 2500 but definitely not now.

I think it looks GREAT!!  The animation is wonderful - just like a frickin\' Saturday morning cartoon and like Clip said, even if you hate the graphical style I\'m sure you\'ll still be able to appreciate the gameplay.

Okay, I\'m off to see the new Mario video....

u.g.l.y.    man, i know many people who support nintendo that are just going into junior high, and man when they see that, they will probably puke.

but, yet again, i think that the 7-9 year olds will love to play a cartoon in real time.
IM BACK. you have a problem with that? get in the back.

Well, dammit...I don\'t think I\'ll be getting a Gamecube now.

The main reason I wanted one was for the next Zelda.  I refuse to play this trendy trash.  Zelda and Cel Shading shouldn\'t mix, and I hope Miyamoto falls into a big crack in the Earth never to be seen again.

Mario~the game looks impressive, but I didn\'t like Mario 64 too much.

Star Fox~this was another strong reason, but it was pushed back and looks like something for the 12 and under crowd.

Metroid~this is what keeps me hooked on GC info now.  I really want to play this exciting looking game, but I doubt I\'ll buy a system for it...

My opinion was exactly like L-I-C\'s I was PISSED last night, as my late night thread shows, however after I woke up and saw the video I really like it. After about 2 seconds it felt like Zelda. The music and sounds kind of gave it a retro feel like it was a remake of one of links old games, which would be SOOOOO sweet.

So in essence mark me down as one of the many that love it.

Uuh Link looks like a gay elf. His design is so horrible. But that does not take away from the game. I would have loved to see link look a little more fierce..and agressive looking. I mean link has never been this gay looking. The whole things is kind of weird and it does kind of taint the game for me...I don\'t like this at all. I don\'t want the more cartoonish gay looking zelda.  But I will deal with it for now.

Nintendo screwed themselves kinda doing the Bait and switch thing

They got everyone all jazzed showing off the Zelda footage at GC\'s announcement festivities and thats what everyone wanted and expected.

I\'ve been to a few Nintendo boards just to read reactions and I can say most are dissapointed, or are trying to convince themselves that this is great Nintendo Innovation, and the rest do really dig it.

It is about gameplay, but what confuses me is if Nintendo as they we\'re quoted as saying, are developing the GC\'s Zelda look with 10-14 year old in mind then wouldn\'t it be safe to say that they are going to develope the gameplay to match.

10 year olds do not really like hardcore challenges, and my 12 year old step-son despises tough challenges in videogames without me their coaching him through it. Not saying all kids are this way but alot are.

Just food for thought.

Nintendo\'s Iwada recently stated "young players are important for another reason. We believe they are the purest indicators of games,"

Mario Sunshine

Luigi\'s mansion

Zelda\'s new look....

No Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness, Too Human, Turok Evolution, Perfect Dark, etc. at Space world.....

Are we seeing a shift?  Has Nintendo just recently made a change in their business model?

The GC is strictly for kids now and the change in Zelda has everything to do with the shift...it seems.

I seriously smell something fishy.
