With the news of the attack and the talk of war going on for the past five days has gotten me seriously considering seeking out my local recruiter and signing up. You should know, that I haven\'t come to this point lightly. As the son of a Vietnam veteran, I know the personal horror and loss of innocence that going through a war can wreak on an individual. I always said that I would not fight for another Vietnam, I would dodge the draft if I had to, but I would be one of the first MOFO\'s to sign up if the United States is threatened.
This week, my words are being tested. The US has been attacked, weither by a group of individuals or a nation, and there is serious talk of war. Although, I sometimes despise my government, it\'s not them who I would be willing to fight and possibly die for. It is this nation, and everything it has come to represent throughout it\'s history. And as Sullivan Bellou said to his wife in a letter 3 day before being mortally wounded at the first battle of Bull Run, "I know how strongly American Civilization now leans upon the triumph of the Government, and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and suffering of the Revolution. And I am willing -- perfectly willing -- to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this nation, and to pay that debt."
I feel that debt must be repayed, for all those who served and died in past American Wars. Nothing in this world is free, not even freedom, and if that debt is not repayed, then I do not think that I diserve to live in this land which others have protected and preserved at the cost of their lives.
So I thought I\'d tell you how I felt, and was curious as to how many other American forum members here felt the same way and are considering signing up for the service?
