So I\'m thinking about getting an iBook
« on: September 18, 2001, 12:03:39 PM »
Well the title pretty much sums it up.

I need a laptop for school (it\'s a requirement) and I still haven\'t got one.

I can\'t spend too much money (since I\'m a poor collige student:() so my choices are

A normal PC laptop
If I get a brand name, like an IBM ThinkPad I probly won\'t be able to get one with acceptible specs (well it\'ll be more than enough, it\'s just me that\'s a tech freak)

Or I can get a no name laptop with pretty decent specs, but it\'s a no name lappy and quality may not be good. The battery life was also short.

Or I can sell my family and both my legs and get a PowerBook G4.
Or I can just get me an iBook.

I\'ve always liked Macs (even though most geeks don\'t for some reason) and I really want to get OS X. The problem might be compatability with the network in school, it\'s a NT network running some Novell thingie (I know my hardware, but I know next to nothing about networking). So I\'m not sure how compatable a Mac would be.

It\'ll be fine here at home, I can turn my Main rig off during the night and check out all the prOn on the internet in my bed, instead of sitting in that horrid monster I call a chair.

The iBook is a heck of alot more stylish than any PC out there (not counting the Vaio\'s) and I get them cheap. And the battery life is excellent. The 12,1" screen is acceptible only because it reaches 1024x768 (I won\'t touch a 12,1" screen otherwise, 800x600 is too low a resolution)

On the PC side, Ican get Gateway\'s,Fujitsu-Siemens and Mitacs cheap. (I got connections you know) I wish I could get a ThinkPad or Dell\'s cheap but :(

So people, if you read though all this ranting, what\'ya think. Should I get an iBook????

(I know LIC\'s answer already;) )

A Mac using OS 9,x won\'t be more stable.

The lack of Preemtive multi tasking coupled with the lack of Protective memory causes a heck of alot of insatbility.

See programs can basically take as much memory as they need, if I don\'t have alot of memory (say 128mb) and I have a few memory intensive programs running (photoshop, office and Explorer) and they take all the memory, they can start taking memory from each other, causing everything to go straight to hell, requiruring a reboot (and reboots are the devil)

But since I\'ll be using OS X, that won\'t be a problem, thanks to the wonders of UNIX.

I have a powerbook titanium G-4 and it locks up all the time.  It multitasks like crap compared to my PC.  If I didn\'t have to use this thing for work it would collect dust.  Only thing nice is the screen.

I bought an HP laptop last year and I have had no problems with it at all.

If your using MacOS 9,x the more memory the more stable.

When/if you upgrade to OS X you WILL see a BIG difference, especially if you go straight to OS X 10,1.

I have 512 Meg of mem and a 30 gig hard drive.

You think that should be enough?

I do have OS X as well, but I don\'t use it.  I have to use OS 9 to run my photo shop and stuff anyway.

Yes, that\'s plenty O\'ram, if it\'s extremely unstable you might want to have the unit looked at.

And you can run Photoshop in Classic mode, the speed difference isn\'t that noticeable (or so I\'ve heard). But ofcourse PS is such a CPU intensive program that running it in classic mode isn\'t anywhere as good as using it is OS 9.

Yeah, and that\'s what I run the most.  Along with Final Cut Pro 2 which is OS9.  Is office 2001 OS X compatible?  I have it, but haven\'t messed with wether I have to run it in pseudo mode.

Office v.X hasn\'t been released yet, but soon.

The OS is what I really want, I\'ve been dreaming about OS X for a long time now, and an iBook might just be the excuse I need.

I would go for the iBook if OS X is anything like UNIX.

It\'s sad that I am a C.N.A. but I don\'t remember if Macs are compatible with Novell.  I will look it up for you when I get home.

The whole OS is designed so the user never had to have contact with the UNIX underpinnings.

Here\'s a review of OS X\'s UNIX layer
http://www.macworld.com/2000/09/14/unix.html

There was a MUCH better review out there, but I can\'t seem to dig it up :(

i likes the look of the Ibook, it could be ideal for me seeing that the only good think about the computers at Uni is that they all have a FAST connection to the NET.

Just think ON-ONE old Pal if you get a IBook you can look at Nude pictures of Me on the Move, rather than in your house like you normally do. :surprised ;)

I already have a fast connection at home and a wireless network. But unil I get a lappy, I won\'t be able to look at nudies of you on the move. So I\'ll just have to settle with sitting infront of my monitor to look at nudies of you.

too True

but................

Seeing that you like me is a poor student, why not look at maybe a very cheap Second hand PC LAPPY ?

ok it might be a bit of a gamble but it still sounds tempting.
