What is it about rock?
« on: October 02, 2001, 07:10:44 AM »
Now I know this may sound stupid; but I just don\'t get Rock and Roll. Is it the lyrics that are popular? Is it the music itself? I just don\'t understand.

BTW, Don\'t get me wrong. I\'m not saying that I don\'t like rock. I just heard a couple of Slipknot(?) songs and they were off the hizzle;) so I am going to get their CD but what is it that makes it so popular to the rest of you?

If its lyrics could you put some above average ones up and tell me what is good about them? If its the music tell me some songs to look ot for.

Also, I am a drummer so if the song has an incredible drumming selection or drummer thats a plus. Thats what got me interested in those Slipknot(?) songs. The drummer is sick.

Look at Pantera, WHEE, the only true Metal band left in the world today...Phil, lead singer, great singer, can actually sing (cemetery Gates, Hollow) and is probably the best heavy yeller...Dimebag, is one of the great guitarists...and Vince on the drums is great

great lyrics, great music

but if you want the essence of rock, look no further than Guns n\' Roses

Being a drummer.....

Rap=sampled,repetitive
Country=2-2, 4-4, rinse and repeat.
Jazz=WTF
Hip Hop= see rap.
Techno=No good without acid.

Etc, etc.

Rock IMO, (Iron Maiden, Rush, Metal Church) Old school stuff, is the essence of Drums!!! (and harmonizing axes [guitars for all the squares:p])

I wouldn\'t think Jazz would be bad for drums.  The others I totally agree with you.

Give me some examples of songs. I could pick up any Iron Maiden song and not get into it because to my untrained (to rock) ear it all sounds alike. That is why when I hear some rock that sounds drastically different from what I usually hear my ears perk up. Like a friend of mine put on some death metal and I was like, "WTF? How could anyone like that?"

BTW, I know a lot of rap is sampled but there is also some that use live instruments and a lot of rappers are moving towards live instruments in the studio.

And if it was all about freestyle playing on the drums I know some gospel drummers that would eat most any other drummer.

Slayer.
The lyrics are good (especially Kings lyrics), the guitar solo\'s are insane, Tom Ariya\'s singing is great, and they just rule

Tool.
Nobody out there writes lyrics like Maynard, and nobody sings as well as he can. Adam Jones is also extremely talented, and the rest of the band all very talented people.

Cannibal Corpse while Chris Barnes was still with them
Very few people out there write stuff as sick as Mr. Barnes writes, and his growls rule

Deicide
Glen Benton really means what he writes, while a lot of death metal bands write satistic lyrics to look and sound cool, very few of them actually mean what they write, Glen Benton does.

The things that I look for in rock is meaning behind the lyrics, if they have a reason to write what they write I respect it, and that\'s what I love about Tool, all of Maynards lyrics have a deep meaning behind them, and everyword actually means something.
I also like good singers, I didn\'t mention Obituary in the above list (I left out alot of good bands) but I like how they have a very unique (and strange) way of singing. Guitar riffs and all these things I look for in rock. There is so much that intreques me in hard rock that I can\'t really count it all.
I recently discovered that my ass is the key to the universe.....now I must fight to protect my ass from those who might abuse it!!!

You aware that this a Bob Dylan tune, right?

Hmmm good rock bands?  Definatley check out:

System of a Down--Probably the coolest/oddest lyrics of any rock band.  They are matched with a great sound implimenting some weird instruments into the whole mix.

Static-X--I know some of you are probably going to knock them for being such a simple musicial band but they make some rocking tunes.

Pantera--Bob mentioned them, and only if your really into they HEAVY HEAVY stuff check them out.

Linkin Park--They are new but they are oh so sweet.  The two different style vocalists are cool as well as the hip-hop elements (even though i dont like hip-hop)

Rammestein--They\'re German, they sing songs about hermaphrodite, and they rock.

(Best for last)  METALLICA--Pick up the Black Album or Load and you will be hooked by the first three random songs...i promise.

Rock On
