Full impressions on the PlayStation Business Event
« on: October 26, 2001, 08:12:47 AM »
Damn you guys. :) I just bought GTA3 today and instead of checking it out first (which I should be doing), I am actually going to write down my impressions to the PlayStation Business even, which I was luckily able to attend yesterday.

Since it would be far too much to write down everything, I will just stick to the games and perhaps at the end some of the stuff I was able to ask the folks of Electronic Arts, Konami, Activision and Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe at the roundtables. So here it goes, enjoy:

Airblade

No idea if you any of you were able to play this game in the states, but just let me tell you, it looks awesome. I am not really into Tony Hawk style games, but this one really impressed me. The graphics are top notch, although they have this funny greyisch look to them, it still looks damn impressive. Guess a bit a different graphics style there, but it still is very impressive to look at. Unfortunately, I can’t say too much to the gameplay since I didn’t play it myself. Just watched some foe playing in front of me, but it looked fun as hell. If you see it at your local stores, better give it a good look!

Wipeout Fusion

I tell you, if there’s any game that interests me most, it ain’t Silent Hill 2, Devil May Cry or any other than Wipeout Fusion. It rocks. When I saw it at the stand, I really couldn’t believe it, so I went up to it and gave it a try. The graphics are truly amazing and the loops have to be seen to be believed. It’s one hell of a rollercoaster game and the time and effort SCE Liverpool is putting into this one is really paying off. But what makes this game so special is the unbelievable adrenaline pushing speed at which you fly through the courses. The framerate is constant high, although I did catch a quick slowdown at one part of the game (where another ship uses the earthquake weapon at you and it comes rolling). Other than that, I think this game is will be a killer when it launches in November here in Europe. No idea though when it will be in the states though… but I am sure it will come soon enough.

World Rally Championship

If there’s any other game that tops the graphics of Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, this is the one. Honestly, yet another game which was too good to be true, but actually sitting there with the dualshock in my hands was just awesome. And let me tell you this, the graphics are mind-blowing. The cars look so real and the landscapes are even better. Simply the best visuals seen in a racing game on PS2 to date. I can’t really comment on the damage features yet, since I am not sure if I had them switched off or not. From what I did see though, the cars did show damage (windscreen shattered etc), but not actually deforming. While racing, you can choose between a few different views. The one that’s most impressive is the one where the camera is just behind the driver and the instructor. You can both see them, the driver steering and shifting gears, while the instructor seats there giving you the necessary instructions. Terrific! The handling is also superb from what I can tell…everything being really realistic. This one’s a killer… and it will be out this November in Europe.

Jak and Daxter

Wow, the day just got better and honestly, I am running out of words for these games. This one is unbelievable and everyone seemed so impressed by the graphics and style of gameplay. But I am sure you can see that on the videos too. What’s perhaps left to say is; it plays like a dream. It’s so fluid and everything is moving. Just as a reminder; there are absolutely no loading times what so ever. The graphics are amazing and definitely worth your money when it comes this fall.

Burnout

I was already impressed by the movies I saw, but watching this game being played in front of you… it looks so much better. It’s incredibly fast and the motion blur effect, which takes place when you crash, looks awesome too. I won’t say more to the gameplay, since you’ve probably all read it already on IGN. Again, definitely a game worth your money!

Ace Combat 4

Since most of you have already been able to play this, I will just stick to the basic. This game’s graphics is amazing. Honestly, when I played it myself, I didn’t think it would be that good… the visuals are so impressive and the textures are very very good. Great stuff Namco.

Well, that’s all for now. I will put up a sheet with the newest release dates for us Europeans another time. I guess it’s about time that I play GTA3… can’t wait!!!

Oh… almost forgot:

Metal Gear Solid 2 and Silent Hill 2 will be both unedited and uncut in Europe. They will be released for an audience 18+ of age. Silent Hill 2 will be released in November, MGS2 in February and will be both in English with subtitles depending on where you live.

BTW: I have also played 007 Agent under Fire, TimeCrisis 2 and others. If you have any questions regarding Sony and any future plans (Wireless networking, PS2 broadband or any games), just reply in this thread and I will answer them. Excuse the mistakes in the above opening, but I am a little in stress because I want to play GTA3.

Cheers,

Thanks for posting your impressions. Hey, what did you think of "Agent Under Fire"? Does it seem like it has any chance of capturing that special "Goldeneye" magic?
Er, excuse me, how much for one of those, uh, prophylactics?..........But I don\'t have a dollar and thirty-five cents!

Agent Under Fire looks like great game. To be honest, I couldn\'t play it for very long since I just found that one (there were so many games to check out) at the end of the event, but the graphics are very nice for one (crisp and sharp, detailed). The gameplay looks also good too, although I had heaps of problems with the controls. Probably I just played TimeSplitters too much, so the controls of Agent Under Fire felt a bit since they were slightly different. So sorry for not being able to write more about this title, but it sure looks good.

Tony Hawk 3 was the other game that I was able to play for a short time too (totally forgot). As I said earlier, I am not too much into skater games (THPS3 is no exception). The graphics are very nice (about up to par with Airblade, which believe me, is a good thing) and you can too lots of stuff in the game. Here are some more details:

  • 12 Skater Pro\'s (including women)
  • Tony Hawk\'s 900° turn is in it
  • 4 Player (Online)
  • Release in Europe December 01

WipEout Fusion details:
  • 1 to 2 Player mode
  • 42 tracks across 7 worlds
  • 26 different weapons to pick up
  • 32 different Ships / 16 pilots / 8 teams
  • tracks open up at some parts, awesome view!
  • spectacular sense of speed
  • Dolby Digital 4.0 Surround

Roundtable Electronic Arts:
Here\'s the information, I was able to get while talking to the product manager of EA:

  • All EA Sports game will have Dolby Digital Surround implemented. NHL 2002 already being the first one, FIFA, Madden and the rest will all have it aswell.
  • 007 Agent Under Fire will be uncut in Europe
  • SSX Tricky will Relase on the 29.11.01 in Europe. Will have 2 new tracks and a new character called Macey Grey.
  • Need for Speed: Hot Persuit 2 will arrive in Europe in March 2002. It will most likely be compatible with Sony\'s GT Force Wheel.
  • Online Gaming will come, it\'s just a matter of time when Sony gets things sorted (more information at the SCEE Roundtable).

Roundtable Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe
  • The HDD will arrive soon and it will never be used in the sense PC\'s use them to install games. It will be used as "Add-on" device, which means that people who don\'t want it, do not need to purchase a HDD to play the game. It will not be used for patches, games will still be continued to have that high qualtiy compared to PC games.
  • accoarding to a developer of Sony\'s Cambrigde Studios, there isn\'t that much of a differents in streaming textures off a HDD or the DVD itself.
  • Wipeout uses some kind of Dolby Digital 5.1 (one of the VU\'s is devoted to this task), although the actual game will only send out DD 4.0. Apparently, time is such a critical issue, so there are using the extra time to fix minor bugs until it\'s Europe release in December.
  • Dropship launches on the 9th of January 02 and will support 50/60 Hz in Europe.
  • WRC will support the GTForce Wheel from Logitech.
  • The Getaway will ship sometime after summer next year. Apparently, the game looks fantastic and will be awesome to play (quote by one of the developers behind Dropship).
  • GT3 Concept will come to Europe as it stands now.
  • Online Gaming will come. Sony will have it on as soon as everything is ready. They do not intend to make the same mistake like Sega did here in Europe (Network up, but no provider to use).
  • Sony also stated that you will be able to use your own provider for online gaming.
  • The BBA and HDD will probably arrive in Spring 2002. Both narrowband and broadband will be enabled.

Roundtable Konami:
  • Suikoden 3 (sp?) will come to Europe.
  • MGS2 as well as Silent Hill 2 will be in English with subtitles.
  • MGS2 and SH2 are both uncut (18+).
  • MGS2 will be released in February in Europe.
  • Silent Hill 2 in November. (23.11.01)
  • Online gaming with Konami titles will come sometime 2002.

Roundtable Activision
  • THPS3 will be online
  • Burnout will Release on the 16th. November 01.

I hope that answers most of your questions. Sorry, didn\'t ask the manager of Konami why Castlevania Chronicles is coming to PSX instead of PS2 (didn\'t think of it until I saw it posted in the other thread). I\'ll post a bit more later.
