Listen, I can appreciate this British crime genre that Guy Ritchie has created, but I\'m just saying that even Snatch was not the best example of it. I liked
Sexy Beast better (different director, same genre), and it still wouldn\'t be on my top 10 list for the year.
When I see one of these films, the humor is nice but it\'s hard for me to take the criminals seriously. I keep seeing these as Quentin Tarantino rip-offs set in the UK. I think
Reservoir Dogs and
Pulp Fiction were much funnier. Have you seen those? By the way, if you want to see a really funny film that\'s NEWER, see
Made. Now that\'s a funny crime picture.
As for Unbreakable, I had high expectations, and I felt the film had a good idea with weak execution. The story was just too simplistic for the pacing. Shyamalan spent way too much time winding up for that ending, and not enough time keeping the audience\'s attention through the bulk of it. In the theater where I saw it, I felt a distinct disappointment in the air among all the viewers that were expecting another Sixth Sense. That was a big part of our problem. The US marketing gave viewers no sense that the film would be nothing more than a superhero origin story. I guess they couldn\'t, or no one would have gone to see it. Also I found the photography mushy and indistinct. I know that\'s supposed to be a "style" but the DP Serra went way over the edge. That\'s my opinion.
