Sony bullying m0d chip developers.
« on: December 11, 2001, 03:20:33 AM »
This isn\'t a piracy thread!

Basically they are sending out letters to these devlopers saying legal action will be taken if they sell these chips... or something along of the times.

Neo Tech, Chan Tech have closed for the time being and Origa are even watching the situation closely.

Baiscally this makes me angry.

I know they can be used for piracy. However thats up to the person themselves. I want a mod chip to PLAY ORIGINAL IMPORTS. I\'ve had my PS2 for a year and the solution is here and Sony is stamping all over it.

Mod chips don\'t just play illegal copies...

They play backups, original imports, multiregion DVD, remove screen screen etc etc. All legal modifcations.

The fact that Sony are stopping these chips with there coorperate power is bad news!

It means that we will have to continue to suffer their crap, greenscreen, locked out region DVD player, games arriving in 50Hz mode 6 months later than the Americans.

Anyway nuff said.

Sony have every right to do what their doing. They built the hardware, they put the Copyright on everything, they did everything legally to protect themselves so they deffinately can do whatever the hell the want.

More power to them I say.

What Racer said.. They can do what they want. If they feel they are losing revenue due to the illegal piracy stuff, they should do something about it. I would if I were them.

Yeah, u have a point, sony can do what they want. If i\'d made a console as good as the PS2, i wouldnt want people changing it around.

But then again, Rich, u got a point mate, i wanted one for imports aswell, i mean, if i had one, i could be playin mgs2 right now. Anyways, i have not heard of anywhere that can copy games on DVD cos its so expensive to do at the moment, i noticed that DVDrs are between £15 and £20 each, so it seems a bit riddiculous to me.

Exactly. None of the above is allowed. Under no circumstance are you even supposed to make a backup of one of your games. It doesn\'t matter if you own it, any kind of duplication is illegal.

Nor are we supposed to play DVDs/games from another region, I know it\'s upsetting to you, but Sony is doing the right thing. Bottom line is this,

M0dchips = Piracy.

It would be great if we had the option to play imported PS2 games on our Pal machines,
take for example PsXChange for the PS1.. it allows the ps1 to play imported software.. i\'m hopefull that
some developer out there will release a PS2 import cd which will allow playing of imported software but lock out
backup versions of software.. it\'s possible

rich, you fail to realize that sony DOES NOT want you to play original imports

for obvious reasons, territorial lockouts exist

Racer / Serrano: When you purchase a PS2 it is your PS2. You can throw it down the stairs, open it and solder things to it etc.

You can do what you smegging like with the console which is your property as you own it. There is a newish law which goes along the lines of hardware can\'t be altered for illegal purposes but its very sketchy.

Datamage: You are wrong mate. Well least in England one backup is allowed per copy of the game. So if I say got GT3 I would be legally allowed to own one backup. Again DVD multiregion is not illegal of it was there wouldn\'t be this nice product known as DVD Region X which is on sale in high street shops such as HMV.

MM: Of course they exist. They don\'t exist for any logical reason other than to line Sony\'s pockets. They want the power to release games in different countries at different times for their own marketing reasons.

Sorry guys... but SONY doesn´t have the right to do anything they want as long as I don´t harm their copyright ! I bought me a PS2 and I have the right to do with it what I want !!!
If I buy a new car and the company forces me with a chip or something to drive only 100mph, than it is MY chioce to rip out that chip and drive as fast as I wish... I´m not allowed to sell this car as my invention, but I can sell the knowledge on how to rip that chip off... got my point ?! :D

Just my two cents but why should I not be allowed to play an import original Japanese game that will never see daylight in the US or any other region?  SCEA never losses a dime because it is never released in the US.  If anything Sony as a whole gains $$$ as they have an extra sale of software that would otherwise never be sold.

Anyway just my thoughts

I am against territorial lockouts.  They only exist to inflate price between the regions.
