What\'ll happen if the hard drive on the Xbox goes bad?
« on: December 31, 2001, 10:45:30 AM »
Like all hard drives, it\'s only a matter of time before it goes bad.

Unlike the PS2 and GCN, if there\'s no memory card, it\'ll play regardless. But aren\'t there a few games that download data to the hard drive initially to decrease load times during the game?

Just curious. well....8 gig hard drives don\'t cost that much nowadays. Around $70 (just basing it off of the price of the current 40gig hard drive at $150).

That\'s why we have extended warranties.  I was told nothing was supposed to be on top of your x-box (curently my Dreamcast sits atop of it) but the thing is so damn big, I don\'t have room for that and everything else to be flat with nothing on top of them and the DC is a top loaded machine as is the GCN so nothing can go on top of them.  In other words, if it breaks, I\'ll replace it, no big deal. :)  I\'ll just be more cautious before the warranty is up.

I brought this point up several times in the more heated Xbox vs. PS2 debates we had here early on. The HDD advantage, going to Xbox for now.. but quickly shifting to PS2 once Sony releases theirs. Why? Because it\'s removable, which not only means that if the HDD goes bad you can easily replace it.. but if it gets filled up (and yer a packrat like me) you can have 2 - 20 HDD\'s that you can swap in an out whenever you like. It also makes them conviently portable, so you can show off your HDD contents with PS2 using friends without havin to drag the whole system along.

Not to mention that while Sony orginally plans to ship a 40 gig HDD (Correct?), smaller and more consumer minded HDD\'s will eventually enter the market. Eventually you can expect the choices to range from 5 to 80 gig depending on how much you want to pay and what use your planning to get out of it.

I have no idea about GC HDD\'s. AFAIK, they have neither been announced or insinuated to. Anyone with more info, please clarify that point.

GmanJoe, I got 30 days to think if I want to get the 1 year warrantie. If anything goes wrong, I\'d get a new Xbox with the warrantie.    :D

Go to anandtech at http://www.anandtech.com to check out the inside of the X-BOX.

They\'ve warned: DO NOT EVER DROP YOUR XBOX coz the HD inside is unprotected with nothing holding it or absorbing potential shocks.

Another interesting point is that all current XBOX games DOES NOT featured AA eventhough it\'s available. :)

Yeah, well try dropping your PS2.  What a stupid comment by that guy--who\'d want to drop any console?  Did he recommend throwing your GC against the wall?

Another thing about this HD, sure it\'s possible that the HD will go  bad, but my Tandy 1000 and 286 still have their HDs going so I\'m not sure how much of a risk there really is.

Another thing, I doubt I\'ll buy the PS2 HD--add ons never get much attention from consumers or devs it seems like a waste of money to me.

One final thing--you are kidding yourself if you think an internal HD is a bad idea by MS reguardless if there is a possible crash or not.  Ask yourself this question: do you really think that the PS3 and xbox2 will not have internal HDs?  Internal storage devices will be standard for consoles from now on.

There are subtle differences in running a hard drive in a console system and running one in a PC.  Most PCs stay on for long amounts of time, most people leave there systems on for days at a time without shutting them down or even rebooting them.  A console system is constantly being shut down and turned on.  Starting and stopping a hard drive several times a day is harmful, and can build up a residue on the heads that will slow down the drive and can eventually increase bad sectors on the drive platters.  Also, like everything these days, hard drives aren\'t made as well as they were during the days of the Tandy 1000.  Companies streamline production to save money with the expectations that if the drive goes bad in 5 years instead of 10, it won\'t matter because it\'ll be totally outdated by that time anyway.  So this would mean that gone are the days of pulling out an old console system to play an old favorite (just a few weeks ago I hooked up my Atari 5200 to play Jungle Hunt :) ) unless you are extremely lucky and your system\'s hard drive lasts forever, which it likely won\'t again due to the constant stopping and starting due to power cycling the console.

I\'ll concede that by the time the XBox 2 and PS3 systems roll out they\'ll come standard with hard drives, of course they will.  I do think the PS2 hard drive stands a better chance of success due to it being required to play FFXI, which is bound to push the hardware sales for the PS2 quite a bit.  I guess we\'ll see how things work out over the next year though.  It\'s anybody\'s game, and anybody\'s guess.

Did PS2 feature emotions and next gen. graphics in launch games?

Built-in HD is better than an add-on...do we need to waste our time to explain why?

When you have a built-in HD from the beginning...you can take full advantage of it ! anything else?

That\'s like saying if I move into a house and there\'s no bed, and then I bring in a bed, I can\'t take full advantage of it because it wasn\'t there before.  I usually don\'t like to pull punches, but that is the most asinine thing I\'ve heard in awhile.  If I don\'t have a sound card in my PC, and then I add a soundcard, I can still take full advantage of it.

It could be said I suppose that by adding a hard drive to the PS2 after the fact you won\'t be able to save pre-hard drive games to the drive, but I would hope that Sony would design some sort of application that would offer the you option of redirecting game saves to the HD, fooling the system into thinking it\'s a memory card.  That may not happen, but it would be nice, and one would think it would be possible.

I think the only bad that would come out of a hard drive for the PS2 would be the price factor for current PS2 owners as well as how many adopt the idea of a hard drive in their console system.
