See, you don\'t even know how Canadians say these words vs. how Americans say them.

Canadians:
About = " a boat " [like the O sound in "croak"]
Sorry = " Sore -ee " [Say the word "sore" then add another long e to the end]

Americans:
About = " a bout " [like the O sound in "foul"]
Sorry = " Sari " [like the Indian garment; rhymes with "safari"]

There are other examples, believe me.

god!, im so sick of hearing that we say it "a-boat", we do not say it like that..... just cause im canadian and "around it all the time" does not mean that i cannot tell the difference between a-bout and a-boat.

the only sterotype i can admit to is that, yes, we or at least I, use the word "eh" frequently.

Huh?

Americans know how to say sorry?;)

Accents on either side of the border, CDN/US, can be perceived as "odd" relative to your position to the 49th parallel. Arguing otherwise,...well IMO, is pointless. Drink and be merry.:)

Ok, so how do you explain this:

http://www.cbc4kids.ca/general/whats-new/daily-top-stories/2000/week-23/tuesday/default.html

and this

Quote
http://pasture.ecn.purdue.edu/~agenhtml/agenmc/canada/speak.html

"Canadian speech is much more similar to American speech than to the English spoken in England and other parts of the United Kingdom. However, Americans may hear a British-like accent in Canadian speech. This is due in part to the fact that Canadians often use "raised vowel" sounds, resulting in the more clipped, "British" sound. Listen to a Canadian say "out and about". Americans tend to hear it as "oot and aboot" (rhymes with hoot). Of course, if you mention this to a Canadian he may think you have lost your mind. We Canadians don\'t hear the difference!"

and this

Quote
http://www.yorku.ca/twainweb/troberts/raising.html

To American ears, the Canadian pronunciation of about often sounds like aboot, but this is only an illusion. Because the more familiar pronunciation of /aw/ is articulated with the tongue in a low position, and because it raises to a mid position in Canadian English when the vowel precedes the voiceless obstruents listed above, speakers of other varieties of English will immediately detect the vowel raising, but will sometimes think that the vowel has raised farther than it actually does, all the way to /u/, which is a high vowel--hence the mishearing (and not-quite-right imitation) of this pronunciation as aboot.

The last quote is interesting.  The author is correct that many Americans think Canadians pronounce the word "aboot."  I recognize that this is not the case.  My interpretation of the Canadian pronounciation is "a boat," which is one stage less extreme than "aboot."  It\'s more extreme than the example wav file posted on that page, but I stand by my assertion that Canadians actually do say it "a boat."  Not all the time, and not everyone, but often enough that I\'ve encountered it on many occasions.

Keep in mind that I\'ve never said that Canadian pronounciation is wrong or bad in any way.  I\'m just trying to get you to admit that Canadians say certain words differently then Americans do.  There\'s nothing wrong with that.

July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.
