I saw it a few weeks ago, since it opened in LA in December to qualify for the Academy awards.
Black Hawk Down is an oddity. It doesn\'t fit any category you might try to put it into, because there really has never been anything like it before. If you\'ve seen some marginal or bad reviews, I think most of them are due to people being unable to categorize it, or having some kind of false expectation. It\'s not a great film or a classic of any sort. The best you can say is that it\'s great for what it is... but what is it? I know this is confusing.
It\'s a challenging film, which I think is good. It bears a strong resemblence to a documentary in the wealth of detail and realism, but it definitely contains a narrative style that makes it unlike a documentary. I like films like this that don\'t fit into Hollywood\'s mold. It makes perfect sense in a way. The illogic of our modern wars are represented on the screen by an uncommon, nonstandard, almost illogical war picture.
It\'s worth seeing, don\'t miss it.
