Xbox Takes Over Japan!
« on: February 08, 2002, 01:08:56 PM »
Interesting news!  :)

As we reported earlier, the special edition Xbox is number 1 on Japan\'s largest and most popular online retailer, Amazon.jp. While it was number 1, the regular xbox (the ones you guys have) was nowhere in the top 50. Today, we can confirm that the regular xbox is now number 2 on the top 100 sales & preorders list with the special edition taking the top spot!

Here is how the top 20 looks at the time of writing: [Note - Some translations are not exactly right - As you\'ll see :) ]

Maybe Nintendo should do something instead of resting on their laurels.

Hmm, maybe we were all wrong thinking that Japan wouldn\'t pick up the Xbox because it\'s an American console. We\'ll just have to see how the future plays out. Good job so far.

This really surpised me.

Woah.. for a "Dead" console, the DC seems to still be selling pretty well over there. I don\'t even see the PS2  or NGC anywhere on that list. I heard Sega even had to kick back into production to meet demand, but only a very limited number are being made.. like 15,000 or something. Kick ass.

I\'m not sure if that was...

1) Racist.

2) Ignorant  - well, okay I\'m sure that it was that.

Better yet, what was the point of that comment?

No, that\'s wrong.  Dreamcast sold out when it came out as did many other consoles, what difference does that make today?  Enough said.

Probally a little bit of both. But I respect American Japanese gamers.

What other console was there for DC to compete against N64. And ps2 was launching almost a year after it.  Surely ps2 played a little part in the death of DC. But everyone was saying the japanese had no interest in xbox too see this only shows that it will have success.

Ryu is right, the xbox could tank during month 2, but regardless I\'m still surprised at what I\'m seeing even though it\'s early.

I expected it to show up top 30 maybe, under 10 max (but not for long).  These were my realistic (or so I thought) expectations, this is above and beyond what I thought.

i dont get why the issue of respect should come up on something as trivial as gaming.  And what is it you dont respect?  Or do you just not respect the Japanese on the proviso that they play games??  Thats the most stupid comment you\'ve ever made Quddy ol\' chap

missed your point here.  PS2 launching a year after it, therefore the DC sold out?  Are you saying that because the PS2 was so far away they had to fill their gaming void??  Japan doesnt have a gaming void!  They have more games coming out non-stop than anyone.  Ugh... confused...dazed, flying around amid a cornucopia of sexual frustration and mis-conduct

The Dreamcast was but one example, there are many others.  To single out the DC from my example is just a cheap way to try and become more enthusiastic about the X-box.  I wish it would do well in Japan like it did here in the US, but that just won\'t happen.  It\'ll take a lot more than Sega and Tecmo to make it a huge system over there.

*Points in the general direction of Enix*

I\'d like to go further on Ryu\'s comment about Enix...The Japanese gamers need hardcore Japanese style RPG\'s, which the Xbox has none of. The only actual RPG announced has been Project Ego and that is by an American developer, and will probably tank in Japan. To bring this point home even further, Japan\'s beloved Square is getting bad press in Japan for the simple fact FFXI is "too American".

If Microsoft wants longterm success in Japan, then they need to focus on getting games that target the Japanese audience..

The japanese think there so better than americans and that they are the true gamers. And it\'s funny to see them welcoming in an american console. If are technology is so inferior to theres. It\'s just the strong american pride me. I should have left the comment to myself I take it back. But I  don\'t regret saying it.

Ryu said DC sold out and it was not successful in Japan. Ps2 launching after dc had something to do with why it was not so successful in Japan.
