Chocolate’s dark secret

"The rich taste of chocolate has long inspired
intense devotion. But the chocolate industry is
now facing charges that may sour consumers’ taste-buds
Two documentary filmmakers say that at
least some of the workers who harvest the cocoa
bean from which chocolate is made are kept as
slaves, locked up at night and beaten if they try to
    flee."

Those of us lucky enough to have been born in industrialized countries, who have an IQ of over 100 (ie, any non-moron), know that a great many of our comforts come from exploiting poorer countries and people.  We turn a willfully blind eye to these issues, because we don\'t want our standard of living to take a hit.

Problem is our luxuries have more than just obvious problems (like sweatshops), but even things we take for granted, like bananas and jeans and stuff tend to come from places where landownership and factory ownership is all foreign, so there is no where for even the \'relative wealth\' of the country to improve.

Ah, well.  I don\'t try and change the world in big ways, I just try and make my little section of the world a bit better.

Of course, if we\'d produce at home many of those products we buy from sweatshops overseas, we\'d have many more places to put those 5.6% of Americans who are unemployed right now. We\'d also be much more self-sufficent and wouldn\'t need to play "diplomat" to so many sh*thole countries because we wouldn\'t need the politics to strengthen trade routes.

Of course that means even at minimum wage, big buisnesses would have to pay American workers much more than what slave laborers cost, which cuts into their profits. Personally, I think our economy would be much better off with more money in the hands of the people who end up recycling that cash back into the economy for all the necessities of life (Food, Housing, Transportation, Clothing, Insurance, Entertianment) rather than hording it or investing it overseas like many of the richer US citizens do.

Actually, that\'s a new one to me. Jeesus, I didn\'t know that 2.5% of America could wreak such havok on our economy.. boy am I glad that tech-bubble burst when it did because if our economy had gotten any stronger in late 90\'s our a$$es would be in some deep $hit right now.

Dood, if you think that 5.6% unemployment is a GOOD thing, then you\'ve had one helluva brainwashing job done on you.

It wouldnt cut into the big businesses profits, it would cut into our paychecks, what most people dont realize what seems like a bad wage to us is actually much higher wages for that country, I don\'t agree with sweatshops, which is basically a liberal point of view, cuz they hate big business, but in fact us goin to these countries are giving these people jobs they otherwise wouldnt so F*CK the media, bunch of F*UCKING IDIOTS.
