Q:  Could Microsoft\'s X-box be qualified as one of the biggest dissapointments of the 21st century?

I believe X-box could be concidered one of the biggest dissapointments of the 21st century. I believe that Microsoft had gotten ahead of itself, and mis-read it\'s competition. Obviously, it all comes down to the money, and it\'s just that Microsoft lost and is losing a lot of these days.

It\'s evident that it does take companies ahwile to see profits in their newly developed consoles and titles, but as I see it today and from posted news, almost everything is taking a nose-dive. With the subpar release Japan and Europe (UK), two of the biggest markets for consoles next to the USA, really hurt Microsoft. Prices of their units were very overpriced.

Microsoft had a huge wing of software developers that signed on, but as of late, there hasn\'t been a wide variety of AAA games. Also, for the developers being forced to follow specific guidelines to use their Direct-X API is it annoying developers.

Microsoft also blew it\'s perfect opportunity. They had Intel developing their proceossor and nVidia responsible for their graphical powerhouse based on it\'s GeForce3 technology (XGPU) and it\'s nForce-like motherboard. Take that and add to the equation that the company had the resources and the reputation to make something solid, is now a fantasy.

I think Microsoft also relied heavily upon "on paper specifications."  Basically what I mean by that, is that you really can\'t pursuade a customer to buy into something that has absolute killer hardware but really no games to keep you playing for ahwile. As of now, it seems like they have their sights on a Fall comeback, but that\'s roughly 6 months away, leaving the competiion wide open to start taking hits on your market.

I also believe Microsoft didn\'t recognize Sony\'s fanbase. Sony will always be remembered for their PS1 era, and their PS2 has a huge fanbase. Upon inical release of X-box, PS2\'s still sold well. Perhaps lack of AAA launch games? Was Halo enough to keep X-box\'s selling?

These are all thoughts/opinions/facts on why I think X-box should be concidered the biggest dissapointment of the 21st century and possibly of console history.
You think positive, I\'ll think realistic.

Could jm\'s intelligence be comparable to GManJoe\'s?

Yes, in the second year of the century, and XBox is already the biggest disappointment of it. Biggest disappointment in console history?? Have you even played XBox? it has more quality content than 3DO, Jaguar, and Virtual Boy. And all of those promised the same, if not larger results in terms of how great it would be. All were supposed to be revolutionary, weren\'t they?

Some people *shakes head*

I guess it is only a disappointment at those who wish it\'s death every day and are unhappy to see, yes, it still truckin\'. Slowly, but still moving.

PS2 also had a huge wing of developers from day one...how long was it before those AAA games came out?  I don\'t believe (I know) it was within the first 6 months of the consoles life.  More like a year...

This is the only part I wouldn\'t argue with...I don\'t think MS was prepared for this highly competitive market or to go up against Sony.

Also about the fall comeback, I wouldn\'t say it\'s out of reach.  I don\'t see anything mindblowing coming this way from Sony as to be the forerunner this holiday season as far as games go...MS supposedly has "killer apps" ready for the fall/winter 2002.  If Brute Force, Project Ego, Panzer Dragoon, Duality, Strident, Shenmue 2, Breed, Enclave, Star Wars RPG, Unreal Championship and the likes deliver on all fronts you can sure they\'ll be a following of the masses...

If this fall does prove to be a successful comeback, I hope MS is prepared to follow up with plenty of titles to keep the hype up and consoles moving...

Perhaps you missed one key word in my post.

Microsoft

I didn\'t have to mention where on the success ladder they are on now, because I know people for the most part on this forum are aware of these things, but I guess now some of us don\'t

As a manner in fact, I have played X-box on various occasions. Whether it be on a friends X-box or in the store with the latest game, I\'ve played it enough to come up with conclusions. I could go into the huge controller issue, but that\'s just a personal preference, because the huge controller doesn\'t apply to my hands, mind you.

One thing 3DO, Jaguar, and Virtual-Boy didn\'t have in common with X-box is the fact it wasn\'t developed by an OS Software giant that have been brought to court based upon marketing strategy and conditions.

So I felt it should be known that a failure like this didn\'t just sacrifice Microsoft money, but self-image in a new market as well as a whole. Just look at all the big employees Microsoft is losing. Their excuse? "We want to pursue different things," or they join another competing company because of the situation in Washington. Need I say more?

Also, to futher put your interpretation of me in my lack in intelligence, maybe you mis-read a word in my last sentence.

These are allthoughts/opinions/facts on why I think X-box should be concidered the biggest dissapointment of the 21st century and possibly of console history.

Rikku, I absoutely agree that Microsoft is going to have it\'s time under the spotlight and they are going to make money, but that\'s 6 months away. They are losing tons of money just developing each console they make. They are going to have a hole dug for them that\'s so huge, I don\'t think they will be able to climb out of by the time this is all over.

And Nintendo... their fanbase is still pretty respectable, mind some of the games they produce, it sells.

Like I said, with the game lineup the concept of a successful comeback doesn\'t seem impossible...

True, but their userbase didn\'t go up until a noteworthy game came out (Super Smash Bros.).  It was garnering poor sales before that release...

It just takes the right game to move consoles...Halo was an awesome game, but they needed a follow up to keep the hype going.  They didn\'t deliver...

MS has a handicap though, they haven\'t proven themselves in the console market like Nintedo has over the past two decades.  MS has an exremely tough uphill battle to overcome, with the current competition and situations they aren\'t doing that bad...

BWAHAHA! I recall you saying that the console of your choice was a no brainer : Xbox.

Well, if you had used your brain, you would have said PS2.

So far, everything I said about the Xbox has been right on. See, I use my brain. Unlike some people with altered state of minds. :p

The X-Box kind of reminds me of the old Sega Saturn. Remember how seriously overpriced it was at first? I think that contributed somewhat to its downfall.

Although I don\'t follow the console wars too much, I do think it\'s still possible for the big black box to make a strong comeback. I don\'t see it happening, but there is always that possibility.

At my local Blockbuster, they\'ve taken videogames off the shelves because somebody stole nearly all of the X-Box games from the store itself. Now you take the box, and bring it up to the counter, where they check if it\'s in or not. Was it really necessary to steal a bunch of mediocre games like that? I dunno the point of me posting this; perhaps proof that X-Box still has it\'s fans out there.
The fire still burns...

If a strong comeback is possible, doesn\'t it stand to reason it rests on more than an influx of good to great games? I mean, what\'s really hurting right now is the ‘OMG-look-at-that-screen\' factor just isn\'t there. Some would argue I\'m sure but in graphics right now Xbox is falling into more of a ‘PS2- me-too-plus\' category. Ya think?

jm: I think you\'re going a little bit hard on Microsoft. I want \'em to fail as much as any other self-respecting gamer does. They brought the SOB that made PC\'s Trepasser on-board as a leader in development, for Christ sakes!

I can see though, that like Sony\'s PS2 and eventually Nintendo\'s GCN.. the Xbox is going to break out of whatever slump you think it\'s in. The sales numbers might be a little low right now.. but there\'s too much promise in upcoming games to compare the Xbox to failures such as 3DO, Jaguar, and Virtual Boy. Heck, Virtual Boy was dead only a month after it came out.. at Yamauchi\'s request. Gunpei Yokoi left Nintendo in shame after designing that system!

Xbox\'s failure in Japan has nothing on the Virtual Boy! :)

Mind some of the games they produce? Like what? I can pick out a few mediocre Nintendo-published games.. but you go far too hard on them too. I\'m trying to remember.. who\'s side are you on in the "console war"? Sony\'s?

I\'m very pleased with tha ole box.  This Fall is very promising and sales will go up.  The sad thing about Japan is that Xbox is one of the most successful American products released over there.  Goes to show just how biased the Japanese are.
