I was wondering if I could use my Compaq Presario\'s keyboard, and mouse with my PS2.  They both are USB, will there be compatibility issues?

Never tried it so I can\'t say.  As far as I know, USB is USB no matter what platform it\'s on.

I\'m pretty sure it will work..  there\'s a gang load of keyboards that claim \'ps2 compatible\' so as far as I know, most usb keyboards, unless they\'re completely weird, should work

It should work.  I\'m about 99.9% sure.

Exactly, a keyboard, is a keyboard, is a keyboard, is a... well.. you get the drift. Certain functions on some keyboards won\'t work.. like one touch internet connectivity, volume control, but all of the basic functions and keys will work fine. Same goes for the mouse.

I gotta ask tho.. WHY do you have a USB KB & Mouse? That makes no sence what-so-ever. You don\'t need a high speed data transfer rate.. you don\'t type THAT goddamned fast now do ya? What a waste of a good USB port.

Anyhow, for those of us with some common sence to NOT have USB KB\'s, I would imagine a good $5 or less AT or PS/2 - USB converter from Radioshack would do the trick also for both the mouse and the KB.

BeerStud - USB is USB, but it won\'t work if the software you wish to use it for doesn\'t support it. If it does (some FPS should support USB Keyboard & Mouse), then I\'m sure your keyboard should work. ;)

The computer nerds on IRC tell me that USB keyboards and mice are just taking up ports.  USB can transfer more data but PS/2 has a higher refresh rate.  Why you would need 400-480mb/sec of data from your keyboard is beyond me.

THX, the USB port that PS2 has is only version 1.1, thus only having a maximum bandwidth of 12 Mbs (or 1.5 MB/sec). The i-link (Firewire) has a 400 Mbs bandwidth.

Good to know but I was talking about computers.  USB 2.0 is up to 480.  It would be nice to use a mouse for FPS\'ers but like you said the software unfortunately doesn\'t support it.

Ah, now I got it.. :)

Well, USB and Firewire are both competing for the standard in low and highspeed connections. Intel is trying to push their USB 2.0 not only for keyboards, but also for a wide range of other periphals (sp?) such as digital cameras, digital video, external harddisc devices etc where FireWire has clearly remained the better solution as of yet. I think there are quite few nice articles comparing the two on the internet. Hope that helps. :)

We will see.  Anybody know the transfer rate of USB 2.0?  It\'s supposed to be pretty high.

The good thing about a USB kb/mouse is that they\'re hot swappable unlike a PS/2.  But that\'s more convenience than performance.
