Is golf a sport or a hobby? Yes, i just got in a debate over AIM with someone about it, so i was wondering what you people think.

It\'s a hobby in my mind.

It\'s a sport

It\'s a competative physical activity, in which scores are kept.  How is it not a sport?

Physical activites? Anoyone can play the game. A 300 pound woman can play it. Sure, it takes skill and practice, but still. don\'t see how anything can be classified as a sport when anyone can play it.

Anyone can play baseball or football or the like.  It\'s just that not everyone can play it well.  The same is true for golf.  A 300 pound woman could walk out onto the mound, throw some pitches, and have played baseball.  That doesn\'t mean she\'s good, but she could do it.  The same is true with golf.

No, there is a difference between the two. In golf, the players get to hit the ball, get in the golf cart, or walk. They have time in between hits to rest. In baseball, the pitcher doesn\'t have that much time to prepare. Golf is a hobby, why, because in my mind anything that doesn\'t take up that much energy isn\'t a sport.

It takes a lot of physical skill.  And you aren\'t allowed, btw, to use a golf cart during the holes in things like the PGA.

Golf takes strength and accuracy.  You could be a kicker in football, and play football without getting tired.  How is this any different?

ya, how is golf not a sport?

Like Shockwaves said, anyone can play any sport, its just a matter of how good you are.  My favourite sport is golf, I play nearly every day.

I think the major problem people have with thinking that golf is not a sport is that you are not playing against someone directly like in hockey or football but you are playing against the course to achieve your best score.  But I dont really see how a game with the PGA and Tiger woods in  it can not be deamed a sport.

So cutting the grass is a sport then?  that tires the **** out of me.
Have you ever carried your bag for 18 holes of golf?  It\'s not an immediate feeling of being tired but by the end of the day you are ready to sleep for 12 hours.  Nevermind 4 days back to back in a tournement.

Golf a hobby? No.  Collecting stamps or glass figurines? Yes.

I know you aren\'t allowed to use a cart in PGA play, i just threw the cart in there because the people that don\'t play professionally use them.

A kicker in football is completely different than a golfer. When a kicker kicks a field goal, or punts the ball, he has 11 guys trying to block the kick. He has to kick it as high and far as he can. When he\'s kicking a field goal he has to kick it in between goal posts 10 feet apart, and over 20 guys. In golf, they have a fairway to aim for, or maybe a green. With complete silence, no crowd, no people in their face, no nothing. They have all the time they want.

Yes, that might be part of the reason why people don\'t think it\'s a sport, but I also provided other reasons.

And when you\'re playing non professional football, you can\'t take as long as you want between plays?

There is a crowd in PGA play.  How is it different trying to kick a ball accurately a long distance, and hitting a ball accurately a long distance.  Besides, those people who are trying to get to the kicker rarely get there.

I just find the idea that you would not consider Golf a sport stupid.

sport (spôrt, sprt) n.
a) Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
b) A particular form of this activity.

Does golf not follow this definition?

Cuttin the grass isn\'t a sport, it\'s a chore. I was just comparing baseball and golf by saying baseball is more tiring. Making baseball the more true \'sport\'. I wasn\'t saying everything that makes you tired is a sport.

Yes, I have carried around clubs for 18 holes. But I can say it didn\'t wear me out to the point that i wanted to sleep when i got home.

No, all three of those - hobbies.
