Why can he get away with it?

1. He\'s new

2. He\'s speaking the truth.

Why don\'t you complain when mm, I, Soulgrind, jm, or any of the other mods call someone a name? Oh.. that\'s right.. they\'re not calling YOU a name. Convienient. Same thing watch was talking about... guess it\'s not just limited to games.

And I jus have to have a hearty ROFL at that statement above. If you can\'t see what\'s so funny about it.. then, heh, sorry.. I ain\'t gonna tell ya. I\'m sure Watch sees it and got it a chuckle from it as well.

bah, Chrono and Watchy ruining a good thread again.

I hate both of you!

;)

Hey just a question Chrono.. wouldn\'t it have made more sense if your name was "Crono"??  Because that\'s the name of the character in the game.. not "Chrono".. *shrugs*

Other than that, I can\'t wait for both plans.  I\'m upgraded to BB imminently anyway, and I don\'t mind paying $40 for the PS2 online, and $50 for XBL (assuming they both make their way down here).  But after the first year of XBL, I am unsure whether or not I will want to remain on the plan.

LOOK i have a 56k modem for my PC and have been playing online games for years.

Started off Playing FPS and Stopped due to the effect of LAG (ESP on UNreal T and releated UNreal T mods)

on the other hand i have started to play a hell of a lot of MMORPG\'s

like

Myth of Soma

and

Legend of Mir (still to play everquest but i fear it may take over my life and bank Account ;) )

which ARE 56k friendly ..in fact the only time i suffer from lag playing these is dueing any of the MASSIVE events (and we are talking about 200+ players on Screen fighting a unded army with spells and special abilitys going of left right and center)

and even then everyone gets it in some form or another

and to be 100% honest i am quite gald of this because i am more a RPG fan at heart

anyway my point is THIS

this is an enabled BB map of the UK

KEY.

Red - Exchange within 3.5KM (ADSL)

Green - Exchange within 5.5KM (RADSL)

Black - Exchange not enabled

Blank - Exchange not possible of receiving ADSL or exchange not in the area.

As you can see NOT everyone has ADSL or even Cable ability in the UK

As a result a VAST majority of us gamers are FORCED to STICK to our 56k modems Dispite the DESIRE to GO BB

FACT

the PS2 and NGC will offer GAMERS the Choice of whether to go BB or NOT..this WILL increase the total amount of potential online gamers which will lead to a Greater online installed userbase..which will lead to more games etc etc etc

FACT

THE X box is Forceing you to GO BB and unless you are LUCKY enough to live in a BB area in the UK...well i am afraid there will be NO ONLIVE gamming for you. as a result there will be far less people going online when comapred to Sony and Nintendos(if Big N do it that is) efforts.

RESULT ?

well i know which side i\'ll be backing onand off line :D

And I\'m not sure about the lazy dev theory. ID has probably the best net code out there. You comapare it to Epic\'s and there\'s a big difference in latency. The fact is that narrowband connections cannot handle games that require split-second timing and twitch reflexes (FPS, ChuChu)--it can\'t keep up with the packets.

Sure ID may be one of the best in the PC era, but did they use all their knowledge and effort with the Dreamcast port of the game? If you want your game to support 56k without lag, then you got to consider that while your game is still in the very early stages. It\'s not something you can just add on in the future - because if they do, it\'s unefficiant as hell. Obviously, we don\'t know what causes lag on Dreamcasts Quake, but if the game would be very efficiant, I doubt it\'s the 56k that\'s causing it.

And by the way, it\'s not a fact that narrowband connections cannot handle games that require split-second timing - the word is worse. I still hold by my arguement that you can even make games like that with absolutely no lag depending on how you code your game and how efficiant it is. It all depends what you\'re sending in those packages over the phoneline.

ID didn\'t port Quake III to the DC, Raster did... and they did a helluva job IMO.

BTW: Nice Demographic there ooseven.. for a moment I thought it was a cut-away view of my liver. /me reaches for another beer.

thanks for the info, SonyFan. It nicely confirms what I\'m trying to get at: it\'s a port, and therefore doubt it\'s enhanced for online multyplay over narrowband. Remember, if you want your game to be lag free over narrowband, you need to plan this from the very beginning. Seeing that this game is a port though and at that, not even ported by ID themselves makes me believe this is the very same reason why this game only supports 4 players and has lag at times.

Well, I\'ve never seen a fast paced game handled well on narrowband.  That\'s all I\'m going on.

communicate ideas. The second is to conceal ideas. The
third is to conceal the absence of ideas.
