StAnZo\'s view on Need For Speed 2 Demo..
« on: August 09, 2002, 08:49:51 AM »
Right, i just got through playing NFS: Hot Persuit 2 demo on the offical playstation2 mag
(it\'s the racing special edition in the UK - "Playstation2 Greatest Hits Vol 8")
Anyway, it lets you play for about 3 minutes but at first glance.. all is not well :0(
The biggest problem immediatley is the framerate, it chuggs along at about 30fps and fluctuates anywhere
between 30 to 60 fps. now, this is not what i expected but it is bearable as the game plays pretty well.
One strange thing i found is if you turn off the HUD display and play in-car view it runs a whole lot better.
I\'m hopefull that this is just as it\'s the demo and i assume that it will be sorted out for release, well fingers crossed eh.
Anyway, there isn\'t really a whole lot to tell you about the game except it looks well enough but wether or not i\'ll fork
out £40 is another matter. i\'d like to see the framerate sorted out and probably an option to turn off certain hud items
as the rear view mirror gets in the way.

The circuit that has been included is only quite short.. prolly one of the shortest circuits i have played on a nfs game
so this doesn\'t allow me to pass a decent enough judgement on the game.
The matrix style panning is triggered automatically if you jump over ramps or you can trigger it yourself via one of
the shoulder buttons. i had high expectations of the game but was dissapointed initially at the framerate
once i\'d played it a couple of times i got over it esp if you turn off the hud and play in-car
The game has promise but i\'d say rent it first then consider the purchase.

The only availabe demo on the same demo cd was in video form.
it\'s been available before on one of the DVD Video mags.

There hasn\'t been a playable demo of Toca Race Driver available as of yet. i\'ll be picking it up on the 23rd tho\'

The review in PSM magazine gave it 9/10 so it looks well.. i love the speed blur that codemasters have incorporated
into Toca Race Driver. I\'m expecting big things from this title.

the Toca driver demo is not that good, the graphics & handling are pretty bad imo and has put me off buying, the more I see & read about it the less I like, shame as this was a must have until this morning :(

toca unimpressive? argh.. that would be a shame, after all this game is being hyped a lot because of the graphics alone. I bet it will still have great gameplay though.

all I can say is dont believe the hype, it\'s shocking :)

hard to judge the gameplay from the demo as there are only two short laps to drive, one test drive and a quick race with other cars, wouldnt be so bad if it didn\'t look so nasty, but it does and that\'s enough to put me off buying.

maybe the final game will be better, but this 80% complete and nothing like the quality I was hoping for.

Fugue,

The TOCA demo is a very, very, very old build of the game. This has been discussed further at the granturismo.com forums.

Stanzo,

I have also heard at the same forums that NFSHP2 demo is also a very old build of the game. It is supposedly a build of the game when it was originally supposed to be releases (March 2002). The framerate is why the game got delayed. All is supposedly fixed now.

I have big expectations riding on both games.

it\'s only a few week to release and this doesnt represent something close to the quality of the game? it\'s 80% complete and NOTHING like the screens you posted at the end of this thread

http://www.psx2central.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=23559

the ones posted by knotter8 although not good quality are a better guide to what I\'m seeing on the screen.

try the demo yourself and you\'ll see what I mean, not a case of no jaggies but jaggie hell, I wanted to be impressed (and am not just knocking the demo for the sake of it) but have to say its a huge disappointment.

I wouldn\'t buy it based on what I\'ve seen.

Damn, this is a serious blow to my consideration on picking up Toca Race Driver on release day.
I\'ll prolly now rent it first or check it out in town before parting with money.
I\'m going to try to pick up that magazine with the playable demo on it and see what i think..
right now, i feel a little bit depressed and saddened at what was and is one of my most anticipated games in ages.
But i\'m holding out on hope as Racer has pointed out.. Thanks man.

Thanks for the info guys.

I was looking forward to TOCA. It also gets good reviews in various mags.
