Collector or Gamer? What are you?
« Reply #15 on: October 26, 2002, 06:02:09 AM »
I\'m somewhere in between being a collector and a gamer. I mostly buy games just to play them, but I\'ve gone back and purchased a couple of older systems that I had when I was younger, but more for the nostalgia of having them. I still play NES or Genesis games once in a while, but anything like that I have is mostly just because I like having them, but I wouldn\'t go really far out of my way to get any older games or to pay a really high price for them.

I\'m a gamer. I buy few games cause the money is also short. I finish all my bought games, or, at least, i try it.

. As much as I could possibly afford. Really, if I found out there was a prebuild of Quest for Glory 3: Shadows of Darkness (SoD was supposed to be the next game in the series but got bumped to 4 when they added Wages of War) which the Coles had sold in a garage sale and found it\'s way to me.. I\'d pay upwards of 200 to 300 dollars for it. Probably even more.

I feel the same about Capcom products. Even though I collect almost any videogame, the things I want mostly are Capcom imports or rare items. Some of the things on my list are ..

Capcom vs Snk : Pro - DC, Jp
Capcom vs Snk 2 - Dc,Jp
Alpha 3 , DC
Resident Evil: Complete, Dc, Jp
The list goes on and on, including collectiable toys such as Ken & Ryu Dolls...

And if I could find a mint Street Fighter 2 or Alpha machine, I\'d be willin\' to pay upwards of $500 or a grand for it.

Same here. Although I do have a few games in the library that I\'ve hardly ever played.
Why, oh why, didn\'t I take the blue pill?

Man, I\'m more of a collector.  I play games still, but I got tons of games I haven\'t even played on all my systems.  I got RPG\'s for Dreamcast I haven\'t played- Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2.  I gotta play Final Fantasy X still!  There\'s a helluva lot more too!  My wife who\'s pregnant btw always bitches to me whenever I buy a new game.  She always bitches about the humongous collection of games I have for all the systems, and how I haven\'t gotten around to playing them.  I work 50 hours a week, and am usually busy on weekends going out with friends.  I need shitloads of time to play a game like Skies Of Arcadia, or Final Fantasy X.  Did I mention I picked up Contra:  Shattered Soldier.  I will play that to death though.  I\'m a Contra fan!

It seems that game collecting has become an important hobby in my life.  My first console was a Pong based system made by Lloydds electronics made in 1977 I think, it even had a Light gun!  Shooting moving squares.  Then it was Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, the cool games on the Commodore 64, NES, SMS, SNES, Genesis, Turbo Grafx 16, Atari Jaguar and so on and so on!  I hope my wife has a boy.  He\'s going to be a spoiled gamer!

I consider myself a little of both.  I like having the franchises, but I buy a few games here and there purely for gameplay.

probly fall more into the collector category but I\'m a lot like Samwise in that respect. Kinda like the good\'ol gaming feel is gone.
I still buy most of the major games and play\'em for a while then I just stop. I rarely finish them.

Are YOU a collector or a gamer?
More of a gamer, I think, but I\'d like to think of myself as a collector also. Not every kid\'s got 8 consoles and a good 120+ original games. Maybe I\'ll get more into this collector business later on, but still remain a gamer. There\'s so much stuff not officially available here in Europe that I want to try out.

DO you complete most games you buy?
All of... well... most. There are only a couple of games I\'ve never finished (some I plan on getting back to), and very few I probably never will. I\'d say I\'ve completed over 90% of the games I own. More often that not, I try to do everything there is to do before letting a game go. I\'m still goin\' at DMC trying to get all S-Ranks on all available difficulty settings.

How many games & systems do you own?
8 consoles (+ PC) and about... I can\'t say the exact number, I found a stack of old games from our attic, and I\'ll have to add \'em to the total, but somewhere over 130.

How much would you pay for the game you\'ve always wanted, but don\'t have?
Let\'s see... *counts with fingers* Humm... *counts with toes and fingers* Yah... Way too much, really. Normal people would think I\'m nuts (but I am!).

If you\'re a collector, is it really such a bad thing?
One minus side: girls can\'t understand this hobby of mine (overgeneralizing there, I know, but those who do are few and far, far, far, far between). Then again, they don\'t need to. But it would be nike.

I\'m tired.

I have played probably 80% of my games for a maximum of 10 minutes. I am a compulsive collector, so much so that when I get a paycheck, I limit myself to 5 games of any sort.

When you have over 300 games and 25 systems, you really can\'t play them all. Yet, Every new game I get, I will play unless I cannot find any pleasure out of playing it anymore. I am a collector and a gamer. You can have both, and I do. (points to 7 hours Street Fighter III last night)

Clip, man, fix your grammar, you are killing me!

This is so true Altered, I have 6 systems:

PS2
Xbox
DC
Sega CDX
TurboGrafx
Saturn

The TurboGrafx is my largest collection and I have some very rare games for it, but I have yet to play them.  The PS2 is my second largest collection and there are 4 unopened games that I have not played as well.  Technically, I am more of a collector than a gamer at this point even though I play games every chance I get.  I have to also agree with Ryu, I do get satisfaction in finding rare games regardless of whether I play them or not.  For example I have no urge to play Japanese style RPG\'s, yet I buy them and never play them.  Y\'s for the Turbo comes to mind.  I just can\'t seem to get into the Skies of Arcadia, Arc the Lad stuff.

This leads to wonder, will there be any rare (non import) games for the PS2?  With the popularity of the system I highly doubt it.  Gaming is an expensive hobby and my wife is always nagging me to sell games I don\'t play, but as I have come to find out once you part with a game or a system, somewhere down the road you will end up buying it again - most likely for more money.  So some of my games will sit there for awhile, what could be better for a "rainy day" so to speak?

I have bought so much off Ebay in the past two years, but have lately taken a break.  After losing an auction for Magical Chase (TG) on Ebay I decided to take a break for awhile.  $225 for a Hu Card is way to much IMHO.

I think the only system I would be interested in getting at this point is a Neo Geo as I have fond memories of Samurai Shodown.

Ys is overrated. Memories always saturate things overly positive.

How many of you even know how to pronounce Y\'s?

:nut:
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.
