WRC II Extreme - Extremely disappointing
« on: October 28, 2002, 01:57:10 AM »
Ok, I got a free WRC II demo disc from a SONY rep today. Was very excited as I really wanted to try the game out. The demo has three tracks playable, Italy, Cyprus and Monnaco, with two cars, the 206 and some other ugly green and white thing.

Anyways, I first played Italy. Graphics have not really been improved upon from WRC. I was actually really surprised that it looked so similar (it looks very different to those screens floating around). Maybe this is a really, really old build??? Anyways, the disappointing bit was when I actually went and raced. The car is so light and floaty its not funny, I was actually driving up walls and embankments, as if I was in some monster truck. The car also severly oversteers, almost to the point where you\'ve done a 120 degree turn and almost facing the wrong way.

The demo was extremely dissapointing. I am gonna get CM3 to see how it fairs, but its looking alot better then WRC II.

I am not sure if this is the same demo as the OPSM UK one.

If anyone has any questions, just ask. I doubt I will play it again though...

perhaps the build is very old. Have you spoken to the rep who gave you the disc?

Also, the team did say that the realism is dependant on what level you choose. Maybe the demo didn\'t have the "ultra" realistc one included?

The graphics, although hard to believe, may also be due to it being an old build? I\'ve seen videos of the game and I heared people rave about it who actually saw footage on DVD. Apperantly it looks amazing and the footage I myself have seen underline this. If the demo you have seen is the real thing though, than I am extremely disappointed to say the least. I hope it\'s not true, but I guess we\'ll see in due time.

Seven, I was given the demo. I might scan it to show you what it looks like.

Another strange thing is that it uses the same instrumental music that CM3 does in all the video\'s that Codemasters have posted on their website. I think its a Chemical Brothers song. Anyway, its the same in both WRC II and CM3, which I found quite funny.

The graphics are quite strange to tell you the truth, nice textures, but big, ugly cut out trees etc. The graphics I can live with, though nothing as good as CM3, but its the gameplay that is really disappointing. There is also no sense of speed, ala WRC I.

Aww shite.. i was looking forward to it aswell.. i\'ll be picking up OPSM2 on 1st november and see what its like.
The music on the CMR3 video\'s is not the same as the Chemical Brothers one found in WRCII. it loks like
Codemasters have tried to create a tune very simlar. yeah, they are really close as i thought that when i played CMR3
but it is a different tune. the Chemical Brothers one is better imho, as it reminds me of the drive down to Cardiff
to watch SS2 in the welsh forests.. i\'m hopefull that the demo we get on the offical mag has the expert handling included.

Damn, might be then that us Rally fans need to stick with the PC to get our kicks from.

Racer, have you played Rally Trophy? if not download the demo and have a go.. that has probably some of the best
physics in a rally game.. shame there are no WRC\'s in it. that would be class..

also if you havn\'t looked yet check out the Codemasters CMR3 forum Racer.

man, it\'s getting hot in there but there are a lot of mixed views on the game..

i\'d say take a look there then make your mind up about CMR3 m8.

I hope the finished game is better than the demo you played. From recent video footage on magazines it looks better than CMR3. Looks like will will have to wait and see.

The really, really strange thing about the demo I have is the physics. You hit a wall and the car launches up into the air and starts madly spinning in the air. I think they are trying to re-create the feel of rally crashes, like they show in the video footage.

Its a real shame, the cars just handle crazy, almost like your on an ice skating rink, its stupid.

do you know on what level the demo is set? Also, if is this the demo showed at the PlayStation Experience, is that good or bad? Old or new? Dunno, I hope this is a old build, because the thought of this actually reflecting the finished product really disappoints me. Also, when\'s this game coming out in Europe?

Dunno about the level of difficulty, couldn\'t change it anywhere. Also, the tracks are really boring, like, all sections of the track look the same, almost as though they have been fractally generated, kinda like the V-Rally 2 tracks you can make yourself. Just hills, an incline, then a decline and so on, very boring, and they all look the same.

In the demo, Italy and Monaco look the same, except one uses a different texture... I was shocked as to how basic it looked, I mean, there is no real time fog or volumetric sorta effects, even the dust sucks.

weird, cos thats what wrc was like to me, i mean on ice, and seemed that it turned on a pivot in the middle of the car, might of been the earlier pal code though

Well, in Easy mode the cars physics are based on WRC1. they are the same so you\'ll notice no change.
in Expert mode they have used a brand new physics engine, simlar to the one they wrote for Prodrive
here in the UK. Prodrive have tested the physics engine and use it for testing and development of their WRC.
I\'m hoping that the demo to be released on the OPSM2 mag to have the difficulty selectable.
