LONDON (Reuters) - Manchester United soccer star David Beckham has spoken out to deny rumours which have been circulating on the Internet and in the media over the past several days.


A spokeswoman for Beckham, who is married to "Posh Spice" Victoria Beckham and captains the England team, said he was aware of "malicious rumours" doing the rounds.


"There is absolutely no truth whatsoever in these rumours and the Web site we believe to be the source of these rumours has been contacted and all defamatory material has been removed," she said in a statement.


She also warned that any publication or repetition of the rumours would result in legal action for defamation.


The Beckhams are one of the country\'s most high-profile celebrity couples. David\'s expertise on the football field for both Manchester United and England has won him legions of fans, while Victoria shot to pop stardom with the Spice Girls, who have sold 40 million albums worldwide.


The couple have two young sons, Brooklyn and Romeo, and last month beefed up security at their Hertfordshire mansion after a newspaper revealed an alleged plot to kidnap Victoria
