Please tell me someone here knows something about computers.  I just ****ed mine up big time.  The thing\'s 4 years old...and was running slow as hell.  It would freeze like every fifteen minutes...but at least it was working.  I went on a deleting spree.  I made sure to keep everything in the recycling bin...just in case something went screwy I could restore it.  well, myself and my computer ignorance deleted the wrong thing...and now it just gets to that black screen, and loads some things, but then it says

"The following file is missing or corrupted:  win.com"

followed by...

"Cannot find win.com, unable to continue loading Windows"

Then I get one of these "C:\\>" which, I\'d assume is a prompt for me to type where that\'s at.  As I\'ve said before, i know it\'s in the recycling bin, I didn\'t permanently delete anything...bringing me to my first question:

WHAT DO I TYPE IN THERE...WERE IS THE RECYCLING BIN LOCATED?

If this isn\'t possible...what else could I do?  PLEASE help.

I found some sites... like http://www-personal.si.umich.edu/~dhogan/documentation/windows/win98-install.html and http://www.windowsinstall.co.uk/indexwin98.htm
but on the first one, I get to where it says copy CAB files...but it doesn\'t explain how to do that...and on the second one i only get to the second picture....but I don\'t see how they get that windows setup...

Talk to all your friends.  Find one who knows how to reinstall an operating system.  Buy some beer and convince them to come over and do it for you.

Honestly, you can\'t expect someone on this forum to type out all the steps needed to accomplish such an involved procedure.

have u tried starting up in safemode and then restoring the files from the recycle bin? if not, give it a try and it might just work.

Can\'t you copy the win.com file from someone elses computer and save it to yours?

Could always borrow one of your friends Win.com files > floppy disc / cd > DOS prompt > copy to proper destintation.

Or just reinstall Windows.

Well, the computer I was using to type up this thread on stopped working (not my fault this time).  The power just wouldn\'t go on.  So I basically just stopped worrying about it.  Someone did bring it up today, however, that I hadn\'t been on AIM for a while.  I explained why, and they told me how to do it...and I feel incredibly stupid for not doing it before (by it I mean reading "Getting Started:Microsoft Windows 98")  I ended up just re-installing Windows 98.  :\\   Live and learn.

Some things were messed up in the process, however.

When the power stopped working in my family\'s second computer, my dad took the power source out of mine, and tried it in the other.  Well...now that mine\'s up and running, the sound doesn\'t work, so he may not have connected something right.

Another problem I have, is it says I only have 1.96 GB of hard drive.  Now, I know it\'s an old computer...but I had somewhere around 12 the last time I checked.  Anyone know what\'s up?  I ran fdisk, as one of those sites said, maybe that did it, but is there any way to fix it?

Thanks for the help guys, and thanks for the birthday wishes Kurt:)
