Police Find Child Reported Missing At Home Asleep In Trash
TAMPA, Fla. -- An 8-year-old boy reported missing by his mother had been sleeping in a pile of trash in their home, police said. The woman was charged with child neglect.
Tanya Marie Joseph, 24, was being held Sunday at the Hillsborough County jail on $4,000 bond. The jail did not have an attorney listed for her.
Joseph reported her oldest son, Jaleel, missing on Saturday at about 3:30 a.m., police said. At 9 a.m., he emerged, well-rested, from his mother\'s bedroom.
The boy showed police where he had been asleep, walking over stacks of trash to a corner of the bedroom where he had curled up under a pile of clothing and other debris.
"It\'s amazing the interior of this house was so cluttered and dirty that we couldn\'t find him in it," Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin said.
The four-bedroom, 1,300-square-foot concrete block home had urine-stained floors and was covered with mounds of garbage, clothing, debris and cat feces, police said.
The boy and his 6-year-old brother were taken into custody by the Department of Children & Families.
Animal Services removed 27 cats, a rabbit and two dogs from the home.
