What do you think about Nero Digital Codec?
« on: December 31, 2003, 10:32:55 AM »
Do you know what is it? It\'s a new codec released by ahead (maker of Nero) which is based on MP4 standard. First analysis and reviews say that it\'s way better than DivX and that it will become the most used codec for our shared movies, you know.

The advantages of this codec are the incredible speed encoding (1/10 with respect Divx) and the quality in image, above all in high-motion scenes.

I\'ve visited nerodigital.com and downloaded the SWAT trailer they\'ve encoded with this codec and I must agree that the playback is better than in divx files. Quality is really nice. (If you download it -27mb- use nero showtime -included in nero 6- to play the teaser).

I\'ll post a couple of pictures to show you the differences in a specific frame of LOTR. I\'ve liked the codec...

WITH NERO DIGITAL

WITH DIVX

wtf?  That 2nd shot looks HORRIBLE, definitely not Divx to me... look at all the block artifacting.  It\'s more reminscent of mpeg-2 than any mpeg-4 derivative.

Ok I just read the article here and they used single-pass for Divx while using multipass for both Nero and Xvid.  lol!  Not exactly fair is it?

On the positive side it only took 1.5hours to encode LOTR: TTT per pass for Nero, that\'s unheard of.  Good job to them.

I\'d love to see a more fair review, great video compression works out best when competition is involved.  My money will go to whomever provides the best quality and support.  So far Divx Pro 5.1.1 is best I\'ve ever worked with (minus the time for encoding).

Or you all could just buy the movies, and not worry about it.

It\'s used for piracy movies, that\'s true, but don\'t forget that these codecs are widely used in home video, personal presentations, etc...

Rolling papers have legal uses. By in large they are used to roll up an illegal product to smoke though.

Yes, assume the worst and hope for the best. :)  I don\'t have a single bootlegged digital movie in my house.  I use my PC to capture TV programs in raw, uncompressed Huffyuv format.  While this means great quality it also means 6GB files for 8 minutes of video.  I pretty much NEED a good compression solution.

Ripping movies to save $15 is lame, and the reason technologies such as High-definiton blu-ray and hi-resolution audio are taking a long ass time to come out.

ps- Adan check out this article from Doom9.  He goes into strict detail about 8 codecs, Nero being one of them.  His favorite: Xvid.  Not surprised. ;)

The FCC passed a mandate that you will not be able to do that in the near future. I guess it was taking away from buying season boxsets of shows.

Trust me I\'ll be able to do it for the length of my life.  And even better now that everything\'s going HDTV people are capturing the digital bitstreams for direct copies of the shows.

Hardcore fans will still buy the DVD boxsets for any commentaries and extras.

The new equipment in a year or two will not allow you to do so. I find nothing wrong with doing tv shows myself, but what do I know.

You mean the HDCP protection?  Just another bump in the road.  It won\'t allow the masses to record HDTV but people who know what they\'re doing and have $$ to grab some extra hardware will be able to defeat this protection.. just like Macrovision, region-coding, and CSS were defeated.  History has a nasty habbit of repeating itself.

Plus there\'s always OTA HD PC cards that can grab hi-def signals from the air and good ol fashioned analog recording which can never be prevented.

Nobody has avoided anybody to copy a cd-rom or dvd. In the same way, there won\'t be many problems to record a tv-show in high quality, i\'m sure.

Thanx THX for the article ;).

What do you guys think of Window Media 9?  I heard a lot of good things about it.  Terminator 2 is recorded in WM9 in HD running at about 9.8 Mbits per sec and it looks pretty good, that is could be compare to MPEG-2 running at 24 Mbits .  To me, I think it would be cool if next generation use WM9 as a standard for HD-DVD, but currently Sony and Panasonic still stick up for MPEG-2 for blu-Ray while Toshiba and NEC go for mulitple codecs like MPEG2, WM9, and MPEG4.
It would be nice if sony just throw in the WM9 options, seriously.  This Blu Ray is capable of handling up to 50 Gbytes dual layers while AOD from Tosh/NEC is about 30 - roughly 40 dual layers.

HDCP will keep people from dumping from their TiVo to an archive, but going direct to PC I just don\'t see them beeting.

Hopefully the HD TiVo\'s will be out like planned in March.  That will be interesting.

My main concern is when direct tv is finally going to jump to MPeg4..  I mean they are only growing and there will only be more and more boxes to replace.  I know the boxes are all software upgradeable, but does anyone know if these codecs are hardware or software driven in the boxes?
I wear a necklace now because I like to know when I\'m upside down.

I think WM9 may be better than MPEG4.
