Asian Vs. American
« on: January 02, 2004, 08:54:58 PM »
My girlfriend and her friends talk about cars all the time. My girlfriend wants a Honda Prelude. Ok, I\'m not sure how good Asian cars are, but I know that any corvette can beat a damn prelude. They always talk about the "quality" of the Honda\'s and crap and how "long they last". This is coming from girls, I just want to know is this true.

I personally like American cars, and nobody beats European.

What do you all think?

Your girlfriend is right about Honda\'s and lasting long. My 88 Honda Accord has just cracked 140k miles and still runs smoothly. It\'s a good car and I\'m going to miss it when I sell it when I head off to college in a few months.

I\'m really big on Audi\'s... I\'m hoping by the time I am thirty I\'ll be driving an Audi TT. However my next car on my list is probably an Eclipse; after college.

She\'s correct. And comparing a $45,000 Corvette to a $22,000 Prelude is...well....apples and oranges. Hondas are notoriously reliable and all she needs to do is keep the oil changed every 4 months (oil manufacturers say 3 months but oil doesn\'t break down until 6,000 miles really - more changes = more money).

I\'m surprised you don\'t know about the reliability of Japanese cars. They are far better than American. Volks Wagon make great cars....but I know for a fact that they are also extremely high maintenance. Don\'t get me started on Italian cars. My old Fiat leaked oil like crazy.

Well, if you have play Gran Turismo like me who owned Gran Turismo 3, you know there are a lot of known well brand Japanese Cars than European.  The good thing about American cars iare that they test for safety before selling it like car crash tests while European didn\'t do that.

If she wants real reliability go Toyota or Nissan.  Hondas do last long.. for their price.  You pay a little extra for a Corolla or Sentra but they do last longer.  My buddy\'s 94 Civic has a boatlod of problems at 150k, he\'s constantly getting it fixed and he takes care of it like it\'s his child.  Now he thinks he has a leak in the main engine seal and another leak in his intake, both causing his engine to randomly stall.

My other friend has a 93 Sentra that is very reliable and solid, drives just like it did on day 1 he swears.  And compared to the Honda it\'s quiet and less rickety due to a better quality interior.  And fyi I had a 1990 Maxima I got rid of at 180k due to a bad transmission.  The engine still ran perfect and mechanics kept offering to take the car from me so they could part it out.  Another friend still drives his 92 Maxima at over 315,000 miles.

The only reason to get an American econo car is for the price.  I do like how the Focus looks though.

My 92 Camaro is up in the 150k miles and it still runs smooth. I got all it\'s papers and it has only received its usual oil changes and regular stuff. Never any major problems.

I still don\'t like Japenese cars. They seem so...not American. Preludes do look cool though, but thats about it. They aren\'t as strong as Americans cars are thats for sure. My car had better acceleration than a V-8 japanese car...who knows what kind of car it was. Also I know japanese manufacturers spend more time with the handling and stuff.

Is it true that Japenese use alot more plastic and cheaper parts?

...Thanks alot guys....:( my girlfriend just read the post and she is braggin that she was right. Pfft whatever they only repeat what other people say. I still think that any good American car can beat any good Japanese car.

I speak out of experience. I had a 1989 Nissan Sentra. I put 210,000 miles on it and all I had to replace was a slipping clutch. Meanwhile, my friend\'s Mustang had to go through several clutches, 2 trannies, other nick nacks that bothered him. When I was a kid, my dad\'s showroom Maverick he bought broke down after 500 miles.

You heard about the Ford Focus? Recalls galore.

You do know I\'m a car nut, right?

Where do you get this stuff?  The opposite is true.  I think you should go to a Chevy and sit in a Cavalier, then go to a Toyota dealer and sit in a Corolla.  Come back here and tell us which one has higher build quality.

Women don\'t give a crap about "which car can beat which other car."  They want a vehicle that has features, good build quality, and reliability.  In general, those are not things you find in domestic cars.  Any one of the big three automakers can make a heavy vehicle like a camero go fast by throwing a huge heavy engine in it.

On the other hand, engineering skill is required to produce a vehicle with equal performance using an engine that is half the displacement or half the number of cylinders.  No american carmaker is building engines with the efficiency of the Japanese right now.  They are incapable of it, but that\'s ok because it\'s not a priority to them.  They think they\'re going to survive by servicing the SUV and truck market, and relying on people like you to buy their inferior cars.  I don\'t think it\'s going to work.  Their market share continues to dwindle year after year, and they don\'t learn any lessons because they have their heads up their asses.

Japan and Europe are further ahead in car engineering than America.  The only good thoughts I have about American cars are Cadillac and Lincoln.  They are one of a kind.. in both design and technology.

Mmmmm caddy DTS. :facelick:

My girlfriend wants a Honda Prelude.

DUMP HER!

Their is this riced out Prelude, lowered, hubs from Kmart with too much polish on them. He spray painted flames on it, put some neon lights in the back, and a big "SWEET N LOW!" sticker in the back.

I also hate the driver, and he hates me because his girlfriend gave me head. Deal with it buddy.
