Iran massing troops on Iraq border

Taken from The Washington Times
Beirut, Lebanon, Jun. 15 (UPI) -- Iran reportedly is readying troops to move into Iraq if U.S. troops pull out, leaving a security vacuum.

The Saudi daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat, monitored in Beirut, reports Iran has massed four battalions at the border.

Al-Sharq al-Awsat quoted "reliable Iraqi sources" as saying, "Iran moved part of its regular military forces towards the Iraqi border in the southern sector at a time its military intelligence agents were operating inside Iraqi territory."
I wonder why this isn\'t getting any coverage?

Hmm, not good.

Btw, have you heard the "conspiracy" saying Iran was a factor behind US going in? Apparently (if you believe the conspiracy) Iranian intelligence spread false info about Iraq and its WMD. The reason they did this was to get a pro-Iran Shia Muslim rule in Iraq.

Well, that sounds like it could have reasonably happened, especially with this news of Iranian forces at the border.

i don\'t know what to take from that..could be they are just protecting they\'re boarders..or possibly provide some type of protection for the iraq\'s if the u.s. decide to pull out...there\'s no way iran would be that stupid to invade iraq after the u.s. pull out..

and like i said previously the u.s. isn\'t goin anywhere as long as it\'s chaotic..transfer of power or not...

Actually, Iran could be really smart.

If iran did provide false info, they knew we\'d go to war. They knew we wouldn\'t find anything, they knew bush would lose popularity. Now, if bush is not elected, they may be able to invade iraq. And as much as I support kerry, he will be a lot less harsh. They could even get away with it.

Yeah that might be, but don\'t you think it would be a little early considering the election isn\'t for another 5 months and that Bush might still win.

Was there a link to this, it sounds like if we leave, Iran will come in and clean house?  How is that bad for us?

It\'s not directly bad, but it would prove that we totaly ****ed up the region.

But I still doubt this will happen.

a country comin in to take over another country is a definite no no..who knows what iran intentions will be? if that\'s the case we should have never helped kuwait back in 91...

Yes, but another US war against a country as powerful as Iran  will not sit well with the US public at all. Costs much to hight, money and life wise.

A battalion is how many?

800-1200 men or something (in Sweden at least)?

Iran is not powerful... to the US anyway.  Our military is ranked first in the world and at the time of the first Gulf War Iraq\'s was ranked fourth - what does that tell you?

On the other hand, I agree the US can not wage another offensive war at this time as our military would be stretched too thin.  However, the US would never allow Iran to occupy Iraq.

As for the battalion question - US battalions range from 600-800 in strength.

Giga, i think they\'d put up a better fight then Iraq did. When we invaded Iraq, there was a lot of anti-saddam iraqis. Iran has a lot more loyal fighters.

and iraq had virtually no army...in a straight up fight the u.s. would win..just like how they did iraq..it\'s the post war that would probably give them problems..(as seen in iraq)..which mostly has to do with enemies hiding within civilian areas..mosques & such..
