Other then Ginkos myriad of defects, the majority of press are pleased with the units and the games launched with it.  The only gripe being, in general, poor load times for some games though and that\'s hardly a big gripe since load times have never been enough to suade anyone from buying a console.  Here\'s some links to some really positive game impressions:

Screw the japanese release. Of course all of those complaints might be correct but who knows what kind of thing would have to happen for some of those things to take place.  On the screens i only saw a max of 3 dead spots - vs how many? Annoying yes - enough to kill the system - not even close.

The dust - didnt see too much of it.

The UMD popping out - looked like they put it under a lot of pressure.

Unless you manhandle your controller like an ape then im sure your buttons should be ok but if not i hope the problem is fixed for the US release.

If the thing does end up having defects then i can always return it.

Sony\'s bet that it could take on rival Nintendo Co. for some of its 95 percent market share of hand-held game market may be paying off. About 1,200 people were lined up for the PSP\'s debut outside Bic Camera\'s main downtown Tokyo outlet ahead of the store\'s 6:55 a.m. opening, said Kawahara.

``We expect this to be a big hit and for this momentum to continue,\'\' said John Yang, an equity analyst at Standard and Poor\'s in Tokyo.

Sony may start selling the PSP in the U.S. as early as January, helping it ship at least 3.5 million units of the game console by March 31 and bettering its earlier forecast of 3 million units, Yang said.

The company met its target of shipping 200,000 units of the PSP to retailers for the Dec. 12 debut, said Nanako Kato, a Tokyo- based spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment.

Sony sold 171,963 PSP consoles yesterday, Tokyo-based market researcher Media Create said in a faxed statement.

Nintendo Co. started selling its own dual screen Nintendo DS hand-held console in Japan on Dec. 2.

Hiroaki Sakuma, a 21-year-old university student, was first in line to buy a PSP from one of Bic Camera\'s downtown outlets after waiting there since 9 p.m. the night before because he couldn\'t reserve one online.

``It\'s my first time to stand in line like this\'\' for a game console, said Sakuma ``It\'s harsh. But I had to have one.\'\'

Sony shares rose 2.1 percent to 3,870 yen as of the 3 p.m. close on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Nintendo shares gained 0.1 percent to 12,020 yen.

Meanwhile, Nintendo on Dec. 9 raised its year-end shipment forecast for its own dual-screen console, which it started selling in the U.S. on Nov. 21, to 2.8 million units from 2 million units.

Sony, the maker of the best-selling PlayStation 2 game console, said in October it broke even at its game division during the second quarter ended Sept. 30. The company has said it will sell the PSP in the U.S. by March 31.

You can take out that never, I\'m not fond of the idea of putting up with load times on a portable.  If it were just a one time loading for each PSP game I could deal with that, it wouldn\'t be an issue.  However, as of the moment, it\'s common to have 10-20 sec load times in between things like character/track selection to actual gameplay...and that\'s every time.  I won\'t be buying a PSP until the load times are dealt with, or at least that the norm is below 10 seconds.

Heh, welcome to the life of optical media.  So long as the system is disk based, there will always be load times.  You accept them at home on consoles.  You accept them on your PC.  Accepting them with a great game on a handheld will not be any different.

I deal with them on home consoles because I\'m settled in with time to spare.  I still find them annoying, even the games with the one big load.

If I had to deal with a loading time for my phone book on my cell phone I would have to find a different phone and/or service.  Because it\'s a portable and because I\'m on the go.  If I\'m only going to play my portable gaming machine for 15-30 minutes, which is the norm for me, then I really don\'t think it\'s cool to have sit out half of that time on loading.

dude, you are overreacting. Even if you have 10 load times in 30 mins at 15 sec, that would be roughly 2 mins. Far from "half" your playtime.

If there are only 10 load times...

Did you read about VC: The Chaos Tower yet?  And for Ridge Racer  I just can\'t imagine a 10-15 second load time going into a race then again coming back out of it.

anyway, I don\'t care for load times on any device so if they don\'t get better on the PSP then I can live without it.  As it is I\'m not impressed but I\'m hoping Wipeout Pure and Tales of Eternia load times are minimal.

Lets say for example that I put Ridge Racer.
If it takes around 10 secs to get the game loaded,10 seconds to get to the title screen , ten seconds in car selection (if I m not mistaken it takes some seconds to move from one car to the next in the selcetion screen), 10 seconds to go to the track selection screen, 10 seconds to load the data and play the game....then you ll have to show more patience than ever.
These arent the loading times we experience in consoles if thats the case.Its worse

Meh. If you hate loading times that much then i guess thats just your problem then. Yes you\'ll be on the go but you will have some time. if you had to wait a minute total for loading times then it still wouldnt be a big deal as most games you rarely just pop in for 5 mins and play. Of course there are those times but personally i could deal with it.

After watching the loading time on the Ridge Racer glitchy video I can easily say that the loading was tolerable. I dont know what so many people are complaining about. Perhaps Ridge Racer isnt the worst of the worst. Either way we still have time till the US release.
