JAKARTA, Indonesia - The world\'s most powerful earthquake in 40 years triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into villages and seaside resorts across southern and southeast Asia on Sunday, killing more than 7,000 people in six countries.

[...]

In Sri Lanka, 1,000 miles west of the epicenter, more than 3,000 people were killed, the country\'s top police official said. At least 1,870 died in Indonesia, and 1,900 along the southern coasts of India. At least 198 were confirmed dead in Thailand, 42 in Malaysia and 2 in Bangladesh.

8.9 on the Richter scale...

EDIT: Now they are saying over 8 000 dead.

that\'s a big number of death.

Remind me of last year\'s earthquake that killed 20,000 people in Iran...

Damn. When I first heard about this on Fark, the tag line was "Several dead" and I didn\'t bother reading.

But 8,000? That\'s terrible.

Wow.

Here\'s some advice....if the waters on the beach suddenly recede by at least 60 to 100 meters, get to high ground as soon as possible.

It\'s like the ocean is pulling back so it can pound you with a huge tsunami.

I bet they know that now.. But you must remember Tsunamis are very rare in that area.

Some 23 000 dead now. :(

Over 28 000 dead is the number I have heard now.

They have started burning bodies on the beaches of Phuket.

Man that shit is scary... 27,000 dead.

Is there any way to predict tidal waves like that? I know you cant predict earthquakes so I guess not.

New York isn\'t spelled like a curse word....
It was a darkness all my own, a song played on the radio, It went straight to my heart - I carried it with me - until the darkness was gone.
