Sony: Next-gen Playstation in 2005 a possibility

NEWS SOURCE: IGN
May 12, 2005 - In a surprising twist on the next generation hardware race, a Sony representative has stated that a year 2005 release for the next generation PlayStation is a possibility. Responding to questions from Jiji news service, Sony Chief Financial Officer Takao Yuhara states, "For the year end sales season, simultaneously building up both the PlayStation Portable system in America and Europe as well as the next generation PlayStation is one option that we have."

Most industry speculation calls for a next generation PlayStation release in 2006. Sony\'s third party developers have backed this assumption up with a strong list of PlayStation 2 titles planned for the rest of the year and early next.

The state of the next generation PlayStation software shown at next week\'s E3 show should reveal if a 2005 release is a possibility for the new system, or if Yuhara\'s comments were designed to take some steam out of Microsoft\'s Xbox 360 unveiling later today.

If Sony is so far along in PS3 development that this year is a possibility, then I\'d be really surprised if it launches any later than March 2006 in Japan.

We haven\'t heard much about the ps3. We won\'t even get to  see it until E3. I think they are trying to counter all the attention Xbox360.

No...but their interpretations usually suck ass. If this news is indeed true, I\'ll be as giddy as a school girl.

Sony would do wise to NOT push the PS3 to market too soon !

We still see weekly reports of contradicting news about PS3\'s digital format and there\'s like zero news about Nvidia\'s GPU which I hope will be G80 instead of early bird G70.

Really, I hope Sony\'ll finetune their console and get it to live up to the specs
they really have in mind, not forced by any MS Xbox360 momentum or whatever bullshit.

First of all, who said the possibility of it coming out this year was due to Microsoft?  If the machine is ready by then with their original specs (which nobody knows of), why not?

Second, once a media format is figured out it will be a very short amount of time to move into production.  People are making far too big a deal about this.

Is it an ego thing?  Is there going to be a mass suicide of Sony sheep if it\'s not a bazillion times more powerful?

Serious question; If the Playstation 3 turns out only to be as powerful as the Xbox 360 and Revolution will you be disappointed?  If yes, why?

Sony sheep he sais

anyways to answer the question.Since XBOX360 is going to be released earlier and already has hige support then a PS3 that is released later but is as powerful will extimguish any reason to be excited about it.

Sony wont be offering anything worth competing the next XBOX if thast teh case.XBOX360 will be the first to present that certain quality of graphics will be the first to develop support and there wont be anything new left to be excited about PS3.

But a more powerful PS3 balances things.
Now about revolution I dont care.If the revolution is released later  then people should be expecting more just like people expectimg more from PS3 now.

(oh and I am expecting more from next gen as well)

I dont really care right now, which is better for the sake of saying so, it is just the fact that if ALL next gen games are going to look like pc games today (condemed) then im just going to be dissapointed. Since we have already seen what the 360 is cooking up, Im hoping that the ps3 will one up it a tad.

Trying not to get my hopes up seems a little difficult at this point. When ps2 and xbox came out, we werent really seeing project gothams and MGS2\'s on pc. Perhaps in a batch of those upper echelon games but if the next gen comes out looking like a decent handfull of pc games today then its barely worth it.

Does that make any sense?
