where are you, third party?
The top reason I haven\'t got a Wii yet. Nintendo has the best first party titles but that can only go so far in my book.
After I\'m done with Mario Party, and Super Mario Galaxy there isn\'t much left besides various Mario spinoffs. (I\'m not too interested in Metroid, Zelda or Smash Bros.)
I just can\'t bring myself to spend $250 for 2 games that will probably end up not being that great. A motion controller is great fun but it doesnt justify $250. I\'ll definity pick it up when it drops below $200 though.
You may ask why did I throw $600 to Sony when they have a very small game library right now, just like Nintendo.
Well the answer is when I bought a PS3 I\'m buying into the Sony brand which means the greatest variety of games and the best 3rd party developer support. If you look at it the PS3, Wii and 360 will all resemble the last generation of consoles. If you didnt like the Gamecube, you won\'t like the Wii. If you liked the Gamecube, you\'ll like the Wii Same thing with the Xbox/360 and PS2/PS3
Its the same reason why I left Nintendo after the SNES. The 64 just lacked great 3rd party games unlike the PS1. I remember not renting the 64 because it had no games. So I rented the PS1 and once I played all its great games the rest was history.... Same idea was true with the Gamecube and PS2.
For Nintendo to get me and I\'m sure others to buy their consoles sooner they need to:
- release a standalone full fledged Mario and Zelda game every 2 years, not every 5 years
- Create a new franchise or something. Stop making Mario spinoffs and start working on the next ratchet and clank or crash bandicoot killer. Mario and Zelda\'s gameplay hasn\'t changed in decades. They\'re both still save the princess and jump on goomba and kill gandorf. For crying out loud, Mario is becoming so over used and recycled that they\'ve put him in space now, almost like a bad horror movie looking for some fresh plot
Don\'t get me wrong, I\'m sure I\'ll enjoy the new Mario, but the writing is on the wall. Nintendo needs a new franchise. Sony is creating new franchises all the time with God of War, Getaway etc. Nintendo needs to follow or be left behind.
- Increase 3rd party games. Last on the list but certainly not the least important. Nintendo may have hurt them selves in making the Wii so weak. Alot of developers may not be able to or want to port their game to it becaus eof the wide difference in power.
Right now the Wii is running on Hype and we all know hype dies down after a while. Nintendo did what they had to do in desgining the Wii to survive this generation, but if they want to get to that next step and seriously challenge MS and Sony they are going to have to follow my 3 points of advice.
