Sony backs out of Cell development.
« on: November 10, 2007, 01:53:40 AM »
I\'m not sure what to make of this, it sounds like after all the hoopla, they\'re givin up on cell, but then it sounds like they\'re just selling the factories that make them, but then it states that toshiba and ibm will still be involved with the cell chip tech and that sony is working on an even smaller version of the tech?

after reading it again it actually does sound like sony is going in another direction as far as cell is concerned,...and if that is true what is the future and tech of the next ps system? they hyped the hell outta cell for it\'s processing strength and now it seems that development costs was killing the company....hell it was probably a strong processor, but you could probably get the same results(gaming wise) found in cheaper traditional chips. So who knows maybe this will lead the way to future systems with cheaper tech and still putting out strong visuals and performance and get this...tech that will be easy to develop on.

Still if that is the case, it would seem that sony kinda abandoned the tech after standing so strongly by it,..oh well it was never a secret that the cell tech was a bitch to develop for,...again maybe this will lead to easier to develop on technology in future systems.
knowledge, wisdom & understanding..these are the basic fundamentals of life

if you can\'t amaze them with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t....

theyll always find a way to make the console just as good as the 360 (sry to bring the 360 up, but it\'s their only competition, lol), so im hoping this\'ll just make the console more affordable. Even with this chip, all we heard was potential...im just curious if this affects MGS or GT since both seem to be using the ps3 the way it should\'ve been used

im not too surprised that they had to drop it despite being so behind it. If you want to sell something new, of course you\'re going to be behind it 110% and advertise the hell out of it.

The CELL was nothing more than an overpriced hype.  Won\'t really effect this current generation, but glad to see Sony is realizing the error of their ways.

you might want to insert a "probably" in there.

Nah.
I posted my opinion, no need for the probably.
The Cell has been a disappointment so far.

So 3 large companies were investing and spending millions since 2001 (or was it 2000) on a hype machine than the actual processor only to release something they wouldnt like and utilize in terms of practical usage. Hmm

when PS3 titles start to pass up 360 in graphics (they arguably already have), i might remotely be interested enough in hearing your explanation.

people mocked PS2\'s "emotion engine" for just a little while

they arguably already have? why are the framerates on so many ps3 games so shitty? and the only game with the possibility of being better was COD4...and they look identical

....Yeah, what games have already surpassed the 360? Still waiting on this one.  Get back to me when those great games are actually released.

The world\'s leading supercomputer is using the CELL technology. It\'s pretty early to be shunning something out. IBM is certainly not giving up on the technology.

Power or no power, the PS3 is the GameCube of this generation.

That\'s good, though. I bought the GameCube at launch.
