Lets discuss BLURRED PS2 Graphics!
« on: January 05, 2001, 12:11:52 PM »
Some of you may have noticed that the PS2 textures in games are blurred ALA N64 style.

Now don\'t get me wrong they look nice but if you look close at the games you will notice that nothing is actually chrisp and sharp no matter how detailed or not detailed the graphics are.

This bothers me as i really didn\'t like the N64 when it did this since no matter what games were released they all suffered from this problem.

Although you guys didn\'t build the PS2 maybe you can answer these questions all the same.

1) What causes these blurred graphics ?
2) WILL IT EVER BE FIXED OR WILL EVERY GAME BE BLURRED ?

I unfortunatly looked at the MGS2 and GT3 DVD Disc that comes with PSW (UK Mag) and they also are blurred.

So i don\'t want to debate if the graphics are blurred or not, i know they are and other people agree, its will every title released for the machine be blurred or will this problem be sorted.

Thoughts and opinions.

Well...
I don\'t know. But I would rather have "jaggies" than blurred graphics. A sharp image will always look better IMO.

Whoa you replyed really quickly, like i can\'t even belive you read the whole thing ;)

Ok please explain, what is Bilinear Filtering, i heard it was a graphic card feature (on PCs). If games didnt feature BF will the blurredness go or is the BF part of the graphics hardware so its here to stay.

What else does BF do :)

ive played "the world is not enough" on N64 and PSX, and the PSX version kills it.  same with madden 2001.  if only they would release perfect dark on the PSX.

i would also much rather look at pixels, and jaggies.

oh, and to answer yer question

bilinear filtering is a texture-mapping technique that averages the colors of surrounding texels to determine the texture color. it can reduce blockiness when a texture is zoomed in and reduces speckling when it is zoomed out.

i hope it dies

Hey they dont look THAT blurred.
Instead I prefer PS2 games over DC games because of this.
They DO look sharper in my opinion.Oh one more thing. It could be the TVs fault.Especially if the Sharpness option of the TV is configured limited.

The textures are blurred it\'s a fact, it\'s there.
However all 3d graphics are blurred to some extent because
of rendering technics used to smooth pixels.  the textures on the dreamcast are a little better in some games but some are still blurry.  The GC and XBOX are supposed to take a big step in texture quality but will be about the same with polies. PS2 will always probably be blurry compared to some of it\'s competition but it will improve for sure.

The \'problem\' is nothing like N64\'s. I have half the games out, and I don\'t notice any real blurring. It\'s not a problem. Quit whining, this didn\'t deserve it\'s own thread.

When it\'s jagged, people complained. When it\'s blurred, people complained. What the hell do people want???

But I think the PS2 blurring effect is for the better and not like N64 where everything looks like in dreamland or something.

I read in GameFan that Midway used the blurring effect to smooth out the pixels. Well, i looked at the screenshots, and it does help to some extent, but it looks really annoying. Or maybe it just annoyed my because Michael Jackson was in the Screenshot...Yuck!

i haven\'t noticed a problem with this so called blurr effect.

Is it only certain games, AC2, SSX, DOA2, TS, Summoner didn\'t appear to be blurred to me.

Maybe I\'m too busy analyzing the game play when I actually pick up a controller

People want "The next revolution in the gaming experience" that Sony promised us.  For a system "20X more powerfull than the DC" these things should be no problem for even 1st generation software.
