POTENTIAL huge news for the PS2 Hard Drive.
« on: January 08, 2001, 11:27:40 PM »
This is probably what i\'m most excited about over the recent news accumliated. Even though its not offical my hopes are high.
from IGN
------------------------------------------------------------
PlayStation 2 Gets its Hard Drive

Northern California hard drive manufacturer Seagate Technology seals deal with Sony.

January 8, 2001

Although it hasn\'t been officially announced yet, Sony Computer Entertainment America had signed a deal with Seagate Technology to manufacture SCEA\'s Hard Drive Drive (HDD), IGN learned late last week.
The initial deal was landed so that Seagate could become the lead manufacturer of SCEA\'s HDD, of which most details have been veiled to date. IGNPS2 has uncovered, however, that the system should size up at about 3.5 inches wide, and could hold as much data as 20-30 Gigs (gigabytes).

SCEA hopes to transform its game system/DVD player into a full set-top box with the help of Internet access and the HDD, which should enable users to download movies, games, and patches/information, MP3 files, and digital photos and store the information on the system. The HDD should also enable developers more leeway in development and design, if Sony can position the HDD so that a substantial number of users purchase them.

Seagate is believed to be in development with two HDD designs, the internal unit and a standalone version. The internal HDD will fit into the back bay of the North American PS2, while the external one (if such a version exists) will stand by its side, like the Japanese version of the HDD.

And while Seagate is believed to be the primary hard-drive supplier, its contract with Sony is not exclusive, it\'s believed. Seagate also will supply hard drives for Microsoft\'s much-hyped Xbox
------------------------------------------------------------

Notice the bottom it says
"it\'s believed. Seagate also will supply hard drives for Microsoft\'s much-hyped Xbox"
theres something the X-Box fanboys can\'t mkae fun of. If thats true then I ask the question to the fanboys. If your glorious X-Box is go great, then why is it sharing a HD with the PS2 that most of you despise so willingly so?

But then again these are potential rumours.

So in effect, game developers could use the HDD (hard drive drive? WTF? Isn\'t it hard disk drive) ike the people did with the expansion pack on the N64?

It\'s different from the ram pak for N64. I must say, seagate being the HD producer for PS2 isn\'t really a big deal...

Alright I admit its not "huge" news. But its news about the HDD and up until then I knew zip so i\'m happy my foggy vision is becming slightly clearer. Not my fault they keep and distribute details piece by piece.

Not exactly the news I expected from sony.  Patches?  I SINCERELY hope that by patch, they mean new system drivers for support for newer types of USB hardware like Mp3 players and such.  Otherwise, if by patch they mean upgrades for rushed games, then this is a step in x-box\'s direction.  However, since not everyone will have an HDD, I HIGHLY doubt this will happen for games.  Lets just hope that Sony takes Seagate\'s HDD as an OPTIONAL device for certain games rather then a requirement for others.

Actually Ryu, I can see patches as somewhat of a good thing if used properly. Granted, shipping a game early and then patching it later is bad business and hopefully it will be kept to a minimum.. but wouldn\'t it be great to play TTT online? You can\'t right now because the game dosen\'t support it, but at some point in the future Namco can create a patch enabling online play. Patches can be sold, not as "bandages" for screwed up code, but as expansions for games you already own.

New Music patches, New skins patches, new levels patches, patches that allow you to use the latest USB peripherals on the market well after the game has been shipped to the consumer. These kind of patches, I think, could be very beneficial to the consumer and I for one look forward to them. (As long as their free and don\'t encourage lazyness in developers that is).

This is not good news at all.  If Sony can find a way to get the HDD into every PS2, then I commend them.  In fact, I will buy a PS2 if Sony finds a way to do that since it would mean that the Sony Corporation operates from the hands of God Almighty.  I\'ll get baptized in the name of Sony after severing my penis off.  What\'s so ironic in this forum is that some people here who don\'t buy Sega cite the 32X and SegaCD as reasons why.  Yet these same ones are ranting and raving about the PS2 HDD.  PS2 is becoming more and more of a PC than a game machine.  Only PC\'s have USB, HDD, and IEEE 1394 (what in the hell does FireWire have to do with games--oh yeah right, nothing) in the same box.  Please don\'t bring up Xbox because all it has is a HDD which will be standard for consoles from this generation on and a system\'s CPU will no longer be a big deal from this generation onward.  Add-ons kill systems, plain and simple.  Even the key gameplay advantages of a HDD will be lost with a PS2.  Developers won\'t write seperate code to take advantage of it if everyone doesn\'t have one, plain and simple.

C\'mon, let\'s be for real here.  This is no mere accessory like a remote control for DVD playback, a HDD affects the games you play.  This is not good news at all.

speaking of a remote control add on

i will be pissed when i have to buy a remote only to play DVD movies on the XBOX.  as pathetic as the "win95 and win98 plus packs"  if u want the little extras, you have to overpay for them.

Do you know how much will be the ps2 modem and HD, and the velocity and space of the HD and modem?

That\'s simple enough... want Net play, buy the broadband adapter that comes with an HDD so that way all who can go online have an alternate source for saving certain upgrades and whatnot.  That sounds simple enough to me.  Don\'t go online, you can\'t download the upgrades.

Firewire makes sense for certain peripherals, especially those made by sony that are pretty options like the memory stick or what not, although admittedly so, I would never buy that crap.  However, the x-box does come with HD support and a LAN connection out of the box.  Lets just say that X-Box is no better then PS2 in that respect.

The HD, the ethernet support... so, making it built in is ok, but making it to where in order to use it, you have to buy a peripheral is not ok?  Hmm... better let MS know that and stop them from releasing a console that doesn\'t play DVD\'s out of the box but you have to buy a remote to do it instead

If by added advantage you mean saving it to the HD to play or using extra add ons from the net, then what difference does it make?  You probably still can save it to the HDD if you have one and the add ons from the net are optional to begin with, like Christmas Nights with the Saturn.  Its like buying a PC game, you can buy it and play it to your hearts content, but if you want anything new and free for it, you have to dl it off the net which is why the ethernet support will be included with the HDD.
