PlayStation 2 Gets its Hard Drive
Northern California hard drive manufacturer Seagate Technology seals deal with Sony.
January 8, 2001
Although it hasn\'t been officially announced yet, Sony Computer Entertainment America had signed a deal with Seagate Technology to manufacture SCEA\'s Hard Drive Drive (HDD), IGN learned late last week.
The initial deal was landed so that Seagate could become the lead manufacturer of SCEA\'s HDD, of which most details have been veiled to date. IGNPS2 has uncovered, however, that the system should size up at about 3.5 inches wide, and could hold as much data as 20-30 Gigs (gigabytes).
SCEA hopes to transform its game system/DVD player into a full set-top box with the help of Internet access and the HDD, which should enable users to download movies, games, and patches/information, MP3 files, and digital photos and store the information on the system. The HDD should also enable developers more leeway in development and design, if Sony can position the HDD so that a substantial number of users purchase them.
Seagate is believed to be in development with two HDD designs, the internal unit and a standalone version. The internal HDD will fit into the back bay of the North American PS2, while the external one (if such a version exists) will stand by its side, like the Japanese version of the HDD.
And while Seagate is believed to be the primary hard-drive supplier, its contract with Sony is not exclusive, it\'s believed. Seagate also will supply hard drives for Microsoft\'s much-hyped Xbox

Notice the bottom it says
"it\'s believed. Seagate also will supply hard drives for Microsoft\'s much-hyped Xbox"
theres something the X-Box fanboys can\'t mkae fun of. If thats true then I ask the question to the fanboys. If your glorious X-Box is go great, then why is it sharing a HD with the PS2 that most of you despise so willingly so?
But then again these are potential rumours.
