FF sold a nice amount but to say it sold more than half of that list is ludicrous.

BTW, I beleive Mario 64/Zelda sold more than FF by themselves.

Umm, you should know the FF series is far more popular in Japan than Mario + Zelda combined.

N64 sales:

Mario64 = 1.98 mil
Zelda OOT = 1.45 mil

PSX sales:

FFVII = 3.26 mil
FFVIII = 3.60 mil
FFIX = 2.82 mil

Do the math. The sales of FFVIII alone beat both those games combined.

He was refering to the world wide numbers, not just Japan. Mario64 sold over 7 million copies while Zelda:OOT sold over ten million copies. Majora\'s Mask is around 2 million I think...

I would hardly consider that an ouch...

Jumpman,

Show me *proof* of your statement. I can tell you FFVII sold 12 million worldwide without proof, doesn\'t mean it\'s true.

- dm
- what\'s in the f\'cking box?

I seriously doubt Zelda sold 10 mil worldwide. And Mario *may* have hit 7 mil, but it\'s a flawed argument. Mario 64 was one of the few great games on N64.

Before you bother to reply, find me a source.

Although I was talking about worldwide/US sales, that is not even a legitimate link. Where are they getting thier sales charts from? They don\'t tell you where they got them from or how they went about getting the results themselves. Show me a real link. Something from NPD perhaps?

BTW do you mean to tell me Goldeneye, which was on the best sellers list for over 2(was it 3?) years has sold less units than FFVII / VIII?

That is absurd.

I\'m not sure about Super Mario 64, but as of last year (sometime in 2000), Ocarina of Time reached the 7.4 million mark worldwide.

The five hottest video game franchises in Japan are the following (in no particular order): Draqon Quest, Final Fantasy, Pokemon, Zelda, and Mario.

The first three RPGs are probably the most popular, and Dragon Quest even has laws passed whenever a new game is released. For example, a Dragon Quest game must now be released on a Sunday so that schools do not have to close. So far, in Japan, Dragon Quest VII has sold nearly 4 million units.

Gohan,

Howabout you waste time and find proof of Mario + Zelda\'s sales.. for each territory.

You\'re also forgetting another factor. A Mario or Zelda game comes out like every 5 years. ;) That helps the anticipation of the game. It\'s not like FF where one comes out every year, though it wasn\'t always like that.

If you look @ the history in Japan, the FF series always sold more than Zelda or Mario.. beginning with FFIV. Does NPD even cover Japanese sales?

Anyhow, I\'m sick of arguing over speculation..

Sure, but I did accidently had it backwards...

Nintendo had very high expectations for the game, and rightfully so, as it was as highly demanded as the ten million plus selling Super Mario 64. When Nintendo EAD finally released the title in November 1998, the big N\'s patience paid off, as the game was awarded Game of the Year by several game publications and went on to sell over seven million copies world wide.

Is that a good thing. They come out with a new FF game every year. It is basically the same engine and gameplay with different characters. Big whoop..

I am looking at the link that you posted before and Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 sold more than all of the FF games on the list. so what are you talking about?

I wasn\'t arguing the quality of the games, but the sales. ;) How good each game is, well, that\'s another argument for another day.

Super Mario Bros doesn\'t count, that was sold with the NES. And notice I said after FFIV.. Super Mario Bros. 3 was long before that.. :)

Speculation as to how much each game sold world-wide cause neither of us have exact proof or exact numbers. :) Let\'s just let it go, to be honest, I don\'t care what game sold what.

Jumpman,

Well I would believe that Mario sold that much. Now I should tell you what Gohan told me, where did IGN get this information and where\'s their proof? :)

- dm
- what\'s in the f\'cking box?

You don\'t have to go searching, I don\'t really care. ;)

Agreed :D

It was getting kind of tiring looking for evidence to back up my claims.
