Is PS2 really more powerful than the Dreamcast?

Now, this may seem like a really stupid question, but I\'m new to the console world (been a PC gamer for ages)

  The reason I ask this is for many reasons...firsty, slowdown.....many of my games, with good or bad graphics, have slowdown. Eg-Oni. Now Oni has pretty bland graphics, yet when there are more than 3 soldiers onscreen, it jerks and slows down whilst my PS2 spews out load loading noises...Bad programming? But wait, although SSX has better graphics, this too slows down whenever there is too much action on screen. Then, there\'s StarWars...enter a busy, large area and there is slight slowdown...TSK...TSk....I could go on....
 Yet Dreamcast games such as Sonic Adventure and Echo the Dolphin have much better graphics than any of the above and never slow down. Dead Or Alive 2 had 60ps on bothe the Dreamcast and PS2, and looked exactlt the same on PS2.


Is PS2 all it\'s cracked up to be? I hope so, because I\'ve just spent £500 plus on it and gear, and I can\'t get another console for a LONG time.

Actually the Dreamcast is superior the PS2.

• ONI isthe same like that on the PC, bland and empty
• SSX is a launch title but it is still a great game, ok it has some slow down but, this will be changed intime for the SSX DVD version (plus extra tracks and stuff) ;)
• We are still (in the UK) getting the First gen games, if you have played any of the new ones you will find a big diffrence.
• The Dreamcast is a great console, but the PS2 has all the great games of the PS2 and being able to play PSX games as well as having SEGA games too.
• Most of the work done by the PS2 is by software so you just have to bare with the noise, but on some games it runs quietly, i find that the PS2 CD games are the loudest games, my DVD games run nice and quiet.
• get a hold of MGS2 damo or the GT3 demo or get the latest copy of Playstation world  with it\'s DVD.
• i play PC games and ok the PS2 is not totaly mind blowing , but i have forund that i am very happy with my choice. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but if you ask me bare with the PS2 until the serious games arrive.
• Remember you can still play your old PSX games and with some games benifit form the smooth graphics option you get with the PS2.

The programmers aren\'t using the PS.2 like they should do.They are using 4mb to store the textures and they are storing them at a lower resolution,while they should be streaming them.And they aren\'t using the vector units.
Take a look at the current games,then take a look at the screenies from games like FF.X,MGS.2 and GT.3.
Still the DC is a damn fine machine

The Dreamcast is a great console, but the PS2 has all the great games of the PS2 and being able to play PSX games as well as having SEGA games too.

I would hope the PS2 has all the great games of the PS2. After all, it is PS2.

As for Sega games, they don\'t exist. Nothing more than vaporware, until the product is on the shelves.

You obviously haven\'t played these games. SA does in fact slow-down. Hell, the whole level that takes place aboard a flying ship (forgot the name) is running in slow-mo. And Ecco slows down like a b!tch. Ecco\'s framerate gets very jerky @ times.

Now on topic, as much as I love my DC, the PS2 is more powerful. The only aspect of the DC that is superior to the PS2 is texturing ability. For starters, the PS2 has much better lighting than the DC. I don\'t want to start a war on this, so I\'ll leave it @ that.

Well.No.The DC cant handle games like GT3 or MGS2 or FFX or probably even ZOE(IMO).

I sometimes doubt if it can handle perfectly TTT.(But thats my opinion.)

But DC isnt a true 128bit console.PS2 is.You can see the specs if you want and judge by yourself(although specs dont always show its true stregths).

Sega rally2 had slowdown.Does that mean DC cant do better?Ofcourse not.


Also check Shenmue and Shnemue2.There isnt much diffrence.thats because its near its limits.On PS2 we yuo can expect more improvements.

Have you played both Shenmue and Shenmue 2?  Think not, pics and video won\'t do any game justice.  

About Ecco, the ONLY level I experienced slow down in is the brilliant Hanging Waters level ( I don\'t think there is a console that could handel that entire level without pop up).  Other than that, the other 32 enormous levels flowed just fine.

Sega Rally 2 was a huge disappointment.  If you want racing perfection on the DC, get Test Drive Le Mans.  You will see what DC can do...

The PS2 is more powerful, by years end you will see that provided you buy the right games.

You\'re crazy. *Every* level (except maybe the first one) has some slowdown here and there. What I mean by slowdown is framerate loss. Perhaps you can\'t notice it? There\'s one level (the process that never ends) or a level close to that one that is constantly chopping. Bring Ecco to the surface and flip around constantly,. you will see stuttering. Trust me.


btw, don\'t get me started on slowdown/stuttering in games. I can name you a ton of games that have slowdown. (on the DC)

I could name alot on the PS2, along with pop up, and jaggies.  It doesn\'t matter, both systems have it.  

Really, I\'ve been through Ecco TWICE.  I didn\'t have many problems at all.  Now that I think about it, I think you are talking about Blades in Motion, and yes, that did have some slow down.  But it didn\'t hender the gameplay at all...

Hey I agree. I can name a ton of PS2 games that also have slowdown. Slowdown doesn\'t ruin a game, I was just pointing out to the person that made this thread that slowdown is present in plenty of games.

I ve seen Shenmue1 in motion.But never got the chance to play it.
You are right pics and video don\'t do any game justice.  
I compared Shenmue2\'s pics with what I ve seen in real in Shenmue1.
I ve only seen Shenmue in real.But only in pics and movies Shenmue2.

But I was right about the other things I said.

Laugh! So they (Sega) printed that on the box just so they could lie? Why in the world would they do that? Dreamcast is as real of as 128bit console as PlayStation 2 is!

As far as how Powerful Dreamcast is to PlayStation 2, Dreamcast is NOT AS POWERFUL as PlayStation 2 is. This may sound a bit wierd hearing this from a Sega fan himself. Dreamcast now, as good as it looks, is just about as your gonna see it for its remaining life unless we see a revoultanary developer come along and bring FF11. PlayStation 2 has yet to be taken full advantage over. GT3, a game that will revoultanize gaming is a perfect example on just how good PlayStaion2 is and probally will be. We haven\'t seen enough games for the PlayStation2 yet, so don\'t be drawing any conclusions.

But Dreamcast held its own light to Sony for sometime and really satisfied me.
