Even if Nintendo 64 would\'ve forced the revolution if the PSX didn\'t exist, that doesn\'t change the fact that it was the PSX that did force the revolution.

During the planning of the original Playstation, software houses said that 3D computer graphics would not happen for another ten years. It was determined at that point that developers would not be able to cost-effectively produce 3D games for an extraordinarily long period of time. At this point, an arcade machine incorporating 3D graphics would be ludicrously expensive, costing anywhere around 18 thousand dollars. Sony made a console designed to cheaply and effectively produce 3 dimensional games before many of the 3D games on 2D consoles came into existance; software developers still found it to be unbelievable. Those games (Virtua Fighter, for instance) were the ones that made software developers look back towards the PSX, seeing it as a great method for getting 3 dimensional CD based games on the market.

Which is also noteworthy: While N64 would have promoted 3D graphics, and Saturn would have promoted the CD format as standard, the PSX was the only system to incorporate each from the start.

I was very reluctant to by a Dreamcast, that\'s why it took me so long. I have had the master system, Genesis, sega CD,   which Sega bailed out on.  I went with the PSone instead of the saturn, which turned out to be a good choice.

After spending thousands of dollars on games and machines , I really didn\'t want to support Sega anymore.  Only after i read that they will continue to make games for the DC did I buy one.

I really liked the Genesis and Sega cd, there were some nice games for that system.

IMO, Sega games can\'t be touched.  They are highly innovative, original and great at what they do.  It\'s all about the games...

contoller is too big, Microsoft losing money(no shlt sherlock, it\'s like that for ever console, so why bother to bring it up, cause you just want another acuse to bltch about the XBOX )

whenever there is anything negative about XBOX your always there to explot it to it\'s fullest(opps spelling error)

You keep saying "forced."  I still think it was merely the next step and where games were headed.  Developers ideas evolved and were soon into 3D.  No revolution...

Sounds credible...this would take alot of links to some very old info to convince me...

Either way, I still don\'t buy it...

"Revolutionaries at Sony" by Reiji Asakura is the source.

I frankly don\'t like the book. One, it\'s a book about a videogame industry; not something that is really interesting. Two, it fails to look into the points of views of more than just individuals from Sony itself. As a book, it isn\'t exactly great. It\'s like that book "Game Over," which covered the history of Nintendo. Except it is nowhere near as good. Regardless, there was a lot of research and interviewing behind the writing of it; it\'s a decent source for information in arguments and such. Anyway.. page 60 and 61 would be where those particular figures were located.

But oh well. Lets try not to expand this argument any further than it need be. I didn\'t even need to bring up those concepts. Lets keep this conversation like an Imac: Simple and stupid.

If it didn\'t cause the revolution, something else would\'ve. But it is what caused the revolution--that\'s the point.

It was bound to happen eventually. That just happens to be the thing that led it to happen first. It\'s like a human being that is growing; the person will naturally get taller as they get older, but through eating certain foods, they will get taller faster, and it is because of those foods that they did get taller at a greater rapidity. The gaming industry was headed in that direction, but it was the Playstation that put it in that direction at the rate it did; it is like the food that made the person get taller. Even without it, the industry still would\'ve become what it eventually became. But that\'s the thing that brought it to the point it did at the speed it did, regardless of whether or not it would\'ve happened otherwise.

of course, i havent been this let down by a console since [yer REALLY gonna love this one], the atari jaguar

loads and loads of hype and not much to show for it.  one killer at, and some B titles.  the jag had tempest 2000 and alien vs predator, and that was about it

any way you look at it, we like what we like and have no resource to attempt to insult each other *hint*

"Only after i read that they will continue to make games for the DC did I buy one." - NPYYZ

Wait, lemmie get this streight. Sega announces that they\'re going to bail not only from the DC.. but from the hardware market entirely. Many games are lost in "limbo" (Propeller Arena, Shenmue II US, Headhunter US, Half-Life, ect..) and Sega offically announces that all their future development efforts are going solely towards the remaining 3 consoles in this generation... and THAT\'S when you decided it was safe to buy a DC???

ROLF.. LOL   LOL  LOL  LOL  LOL  LOL

You gotta be pretty pyssed off now eh? For someone who\'s spent "Thousands" of dollars on videogames, you sure don\'t know how to spend your money wisely. :p

Now if you had said.. "I knew the DC was being discontinued, and all support for it would halt at the end of Jan 02. However there are currently enough good games on the system to more than make a 50 dollar investment well worth my while.".. I would have given you at least a small shred of credibility back.

I bought my DC for twice what you paid.. (probably 3 times as much as even that when you add in peripherals, mem cards, games, ect.. round about 350-400 dollars) - knowing full well where the DC was headed - for just that reason which I mentioned above.

Ginko, your focusing too much on the machine itself... look at what PSX (and anything to d with the PSX) did for the industry.. gaming was NOT mainstream before PSX, and it took a few years after it was relewased before it did become mainstream...

before PSX was released videogames were considered a nerdy hobby (not even a hobby) now they have a turnover exceeding the film industry (although i doubt that includes porno\'s :p) and everybody is into videogames..

you think this is just evolution??  its easy to say something is merely evoltion in hindsight "ohh, people get tired playing Ping Pong, an electronic version was merely the next step, NOT revolutionary, just evolution taking place"   you are being naive and too strong on your convictions trying to make a point

PSX REVOLUTIONISED THE INDUSTRY, the gaming community had been slowly evolving from Rich Kids >> Kids >> Nerds and Kids ~~  Then when the PSX is introduced >> Everyone

it had been slowly evolving before that until PSX hit..
