if the black box survived the explosion that should tell us more about what happened,  the wing got hit on takeoff my guess is a panel got loosened and then came off on re-entry thus causing the explosion due to too much heat and probly putting it into a spin of some sort

Columbia alone has had over 50 overhauls.

And these shuttles go up about every two months.  I think there are still 4 shuttles, I can\'t remember.  So that makes it a little more than 1 time a year it goes up.

These shuttles are so out dated.  They do the job of going up to the STS, but that\'s about all they are worth any more.  They need a redesign.

Call me sick but I hate how they don\'t show where the debris land.  They show them falling but when they get close to hitting the ground they show another scene or keep the camera pointing up so you can\'t see it hit the ground

I was in 9th grade.  We were on a field trip judging an elementary science fair.  We actually saw the explosion live.  We all went out and watched it from the schoolyard.  Then we just sat glued to the TV.

I agree... my wife and I turned on the news when we woke up and that was one of the first things I said to her - the shuttles are over 20 years old.  NASA really needs to come up with something new.  It is a shame something like this happened.  :(

I was 18 in High School and getting gas, when the gas station attendant asked me if I knew the shuttle had blown up.  Another sad day...  then people started coming out with lame Challenger jokes as I am sure will happen with the Columbia disaster.

It was Christa McAuliffe who died on the Challenger. I think Sally Ride was the first female into space or something.

As for topic, this is truely sad. What pisses me off even more is that we gave BILLIONS to Isreal and millions more to many other countries, yet we fly 22 year old spacecraft.
