Care to explain what is wrong with face piercings as opposed to ear piercings? Your ear is attached to your head, in case you had not realized that.

It amazes me you classify it under self-mutilation, but yet cutting your hair, being circumsized at birth or piercing your ear isn\'t self mutilation? What\'s the point there? It makes no sense.

Right - cut the foreskin off the penis of your child. That\'s A-OK, even if he doesn\'t have a choice.

Pierce your ear - it\'s a standard, it\'s A-OK.

Get a tattoo - almost everyone has one now\'a\'days...That\'s A-OK..

Don\'t split your tongue tho\'..That\'s not A-OK.

In more cases than others, thats a religous practice, in which it displays the son\'s future convenant to God.

It may be a "religious practice" - but so is suspension via "fish hooks". They are both religious practices  - but what\'s the difference here? You can choose to suspend if you want, where as most people are circumsized when they are babies. No choice what so ever..

As for the sanitary comment. If someone keeps it washed, it\'s the same as anything, \'cept you are even more sensative. So, in retrospect, when your foreskin was cut off, you was robbed  of part of your sex life.

L-I-C, you just have to realize that some people out there just can\'t accept others. They are so self-conscience about themselves in so many ways, even if they say they arn\'t, that they have to belittle what other people like to make themselves feel better.
    You guys should realize that by all of you calling people a freak and singling them out is what makes people go and shoot their schools up. Remember, it was being outcast and made fun of that drove the kids that shot up Columbine.

If this stuff is cool to you, well...good for you, but if others think it\'s gross, well....good for them.

I personaly don\'t like it, for one, it looks stupid (to me), and also it is not exactly a good thing for your career if you had one planning

I have none of those. Well....except the circumcision. I was a baby. But hanging yourself by fish hooks is not part of your culture while getting you ears pierced is. But even I tell my fiance not to re-pierce her ear lobes. But it\'s your preference. Do what you want. I\'ll do what I want....like, can I attach these electrical wires to your metals? Actually, in real life, I don\'t mock other people as long as they behave themselves. I keep my opinions to myself as long as you don\'t ask me.

And Faithdies, EVERYONE is self concious. It\'s human nature to be. We\'re a species that need social contact. And its beneficial to be self-concious for many reasons like cleanliness, hygiene and health and social exceptance. Even LIC will emulate his clan just to be like them. BTW, adding more holes to one\'s body will only increase the chance of getting an infection.

Yeah thats true.I think indians(and like u said a lot of cultures) used to hang from hooks to unidentify from their body and have an out of body experience.It was some kind of meditation.

Piercing your ears is no more part of American culture than hanging by your "Fish hooks". Give me a break. The difference is piercing your ears is a standard, so you have no problem accepting it. That\'s the only difference.

Well this is what most people think.

Ear piercing: not extreme, putting jewelry in your ear has been around for a long time.
Splitting tounge: Weird, freaky, why?
Making yourslef look like a lizard: WTF!?! (Too extreme)

I\'m gonna take a crack at this. Circumsision, tattoos and ear piercings have come to be accepted by society. Its been like that for many many years, even ancient times people were getting tattoos, piercings and circumcisions. After all those years, its been accepted as a custom. I\'m sure when the ancients first did it, it was just as outlandish. I\'m sure in years down the road, this will be accepted. Maybe not but its possible.
