Suspect In Custody
UPDATED: 4:32 p.m. PDT June 17, 2003
LOS ANGELES -- Authorities arrested a Rowland Heights man Tuesday for the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy who was with a group of people allegedly trying to steal a tire and rim from the suspect\'s car.
The car owner was booked at the Los Angeles County sheriff\'s Walnut Station and held without bail, said Deputy Alba Yates. The man\'s name was withheld.
Investigators said he caught Andrew Rocha and three others trying to steal the tire and rim just before 11:15 p.m. Monday.
"The owner, while armed with a handgun, confronted the males, and a shot was fired while he was trying to apprehend the males," Yates said.
Andrew, who had recently finished the ninth grade at John A. Rowland High School, was found dead in the back seat of an abandoned gray, late-model Ford Mustang. It was parked on the front lawn of the boy\'s home in the 18600 block of Barroso Street. A large hole had been blasted into the back window at head level.
The dead boy reportedly had gone out last night with several people. It was unclear whether any of them would face immediate charges.
The dead teen\'s uncle, Sergio Rocha, sobbed Tuesday over the loss of his nephew.
Rocha said Andrew had recently helped him move into a new home. He said Andrew\'s father dropped the youth off last night, then got word about 45 minutes later that a shooting had occurred.
"He\'s a good kid, good family," the uncle sobbed. "(I) can\'t understand why. Why would somebody do something like that?"
Thoughts? I\'ll post mine when I get a bit more time.
